Vintage air

I have a Vintage air kit on order for my 1957 Chevy truck, but it is at least 3 months out. I would like to know if anyone could help me. I am relocating the battery under the floor and filling all the holes in the firewall that I don't need. The Vintage air instructions show a drawing of the firewall but they don't specify what holes are needed to mount the AC. On the drawing there are holes labeled OEM hole and some with no label. Could anyone tell me what holes are needed? Also does anyone have a picture of the firewall with no battery and AC installed using this kit? I know some route the hoses different way but I am thinking of routing them the way they come in the kit. Thanks.

Re: Vintage air

A bit of artful enlarging to exact full size a screen shot and some printing should come pretty close to having a pattern. It really isn't all that hard to follow their instructions though.

Re: Vintage air

I have installed AC kits before, just not on a 55-59. I don't want to weld up holes I need and not weld some I don't. My kit might be here by January, but I want to get it painted before Thanksgiving.

Re: Vintage air

You need to clean the fire wall down to bare metal. There is just barely enough room to get the unit in between that & the dash.

Re: Vintage air

You can find plugs to stick in the holes you don't use to clean things up a bit. They may be at Ace in the boxes over the bolts or at Lowes or Home depot and not intended for automotive use but flat, smooth and the right size.

Re: Vintage air

The holes in yellow are for the Christmas tree fasteners that hold the OEM firewall pad. If not using that insulation, they can be welded up. The 2 in green are for the stock battery tray I believe, so again optional. The ones in blue will not be needed for Vintage Air except you may need the lower one to measure from to get the 2 new holes positioned correctly.

Re: Vintage air

The simple no weld fix for those holes might be a 1/4 inch carriage bolt that was the right length to put in from the firewall side and put a nut and washer on from the inside.

Just about anything that doesn't look out of place but neatly covers the hole rather than leaving the hole showing.
