Re: Valve lash adjustment

man i love this place i'm getting ready to replace my valves and i found every answer here and in other places. this site rocks i'm glad there's people out there willing to pass on information like this so that people like me can learn it and pass it on wedgemon thanks for the picture of the valves i was getting ready to mess up and your info is great. i have only one question. the damper and timing tab is the damper the harmonic balancer i just want to do this right and once. i've done my engine work before i'm not affraid to take a motor completely appart and start from the bottom up. this is the 3 motor and i noticed that i been doing alot of things wrong. i think thats why my cam in my Z24 took a crap cause i didn't adjust my valves right.

Yes, dampner and balancer are one in the same.

As for the pushrods, you'll still be able to spin them at zero lash, but it will be harder than with no preload (loose), I just spin the pushrod in my fingers till i feel a little resistance, then do my 1/2 turn past that and you are good to go!

Re: Valve lash adjustment

Re: Valve lash adjustment

so what I'm getting is while tightening when resistance is felt stop and do the 1/2 turn or tighten till you can't spin the push rod. i just put a new cam in and lifters don't want to have to do this again lash thing is messing with me.

Re: Valve lash adjustment

I know this is an older thread but I thought I'd keep it going with a quick question:

Adjustment of rockers is when engine is at TDC #1 and you can verify this by watching the #1 rods go up and then down? So that when you see the exhaust valve go up then down and then the intake follows suit, when the intake goes down your at #1 TDC; both valves closed.

I assume when its at #6 TDC the valves are both open?

Re: Valve lash adjustment

Mine is 27 inches, but I’ve got a taller tire so it fills the gap better. (235/75/15)

This is a dead 13 year old thread about hydraulic valve lifter adjusting procedures... How does tire size enter into the picture???

This has been the preferred way of many engine builders I have talked to. Rather factory replacement, hot street, or full race. If it's a hydraulic cam it's the best.

If it's a hotter can 3/4 a turn of preload is all I can add.

Re: Valve lash adjustment

I was always taught 1 turn out for teenagers and 3/4 turn for folks with money. Hard to float a loose valve lash on a hydraulic cam.

Me too but I haven't tried it yet. I can't do the push rod twist method because they turn too easily for me. I have always done the EOIC method on every type of engine; preferably before the intake manifold is installed so I can see the lifter plunger.

That method is fine if the motor is on a stand with the intake manifold off. The way I do it is less labor intensive. Find TDC on #1 and adjust both intake and exhaust on #1. Then rotate the motor clockwise 1/4 turn and adjust both intake and exhaust on #8. Then a 1/4 turn on the crank and adjust both valves on #4 and so on following the Chevy 18436572 firing order. "Spinning" the push rods is no good! In many cases you can spin them rods and still be pushing a valve open. You want to move the rod vertically to feel the slack or lash as it tightens down to zero lash, or no more vertical movement in the rod. The socket riding on the side of the rocker can give you a false reading so one must be aware of that, a thin wall 12-point socket works best. Adjusting the lash on solid lifter motors will make an expert out of you...

Re: Valve lash adjustment

One fool proof way is to loosen all the rockers and start with #1 tdc. Tighten all the play out any loose rockers. Turn the crank 90 degrees tighten all the play out the rockers. Turn the crank another 90 degrees tighten all the play out the rockers. Repeat until the crank has made 2 complete revolutions. Now all the rockers should be 0 lash, just tighten all the rockers 1/2 turn and you are done. Not the fastest way but it is fool proof if you are new to this.
