If I was the judge, I'd find them guilty...because they are. Admonish them. Thank them for contacting the authorities...and wave their fines. If a minimum fine is required, that is the punishment they would receive. Done.

But hey. That's just me.

The thing that stood out to me was the girlish laughter of these morons every time they pulled up unexploded ammunition like it was a record setting fish.

Pulling up UXBs? That's pretty stupid, given the danger. Take this form, and exit over there, airman...

When I was stationed at Fort Lewis WA in the late 70's you would not believe the meat heads we caught going out into the impact area gathering shell and rocket casings. Oh and the common unexploded practice rounds. More than once a pick up load of this stuff. The EOD guys really loved sorting the exploded from the non-exploded rounds. Typically the perps had more than a few beers.

Re: Fines for magnet fishing on base

Interesting... We were out on the land navigation course yesterday. One of my cadets found a UXO and was smart enough to take a picture (geotagged) and report it to me. I called it in to range control and they came out and found two Sherman tank rounds. They must have been there for at least fifty years, and thousands of Soldiers have probably walked over and around them. But this high school student was smart enough to leave it alone and report it.

I'd pay the ticket and be on my way.

The group, led by treasure hunter Bryce Nachtwey, called the bomb squad after their magnet fishing dredged up the ammunition and 86 rockets in a Delta Airlines duffel bag, saying they were just trying to do the right thing.
Does it not strike anyone strange that these things where pulled up INSIDE a duffel bag? It'd be one thing to find them one by one, but in a duffell bag? That smells a bit more like somebody had been trying to steal 'em and dumped them.

Nachtwey said that he and his team had called the DNR ahead of time, which purportedly said magnet fishing is legal as long as it’s in a “green zone.”

However, the warden stated that red (off-limit) and green (acceptable) zones don’t apply in this scenario because the group was on Fort Stewart property. Because the base is owned by the Federal Government, the Department of Natural Resources has no authority to issue such permission.
And theres this. DNR says go for it. If this is in a green zone, it is a green zone. What map are you supposed to believe?

You weren't in the military, were you? Extra restrictions apply to service personnel.
