What do I need to media blast?

So I have some NOS rockers and a door that came with surface rust. I am thinking about building an electrolytic tub and using the magic of science to remove the rust but it may be less trouble to blast it.

What all do I need in order to perform "media blasting" and what is a good tool to get started with?

blast-in-a-bucket from eastwood and fine sand from home depot if that's all your doing

Do your homework on sand not meant for blasting, or you may kiss your lungs goodbye.

They said that about smoking asbestos cigs.....my lungs (cough up blood) have never been better!

I will probably just run it by the body shop as it needs to be painted anyway. Once I remove the front end I'll take the battered fender over with the NOS one and get pricing on getting the NOS cleaned and painted to match the old one.

i agree about ''the sky is falling'' comment
i've been exposed to asbestos, pcb's, lead paint, 6010 welding rods, cigarette smoke and silica sand since the 70s
i also survived childhood without a car seat, rode a bike without a helmet and drove without seat belts
while my health sucks, it is nothing to do with any of those

learn to shoot epoxy primer; not the rattle can stuff
primer will keep rust at bay and all primer can be sanded to get runs and bugs out

Whatever media you use (I've used silica, sand, and aluminum oxide) it's going to be a messy job. The blast media is going to go everywhere that's unprotected. I suspect the Eastwood blaster would probably also work with other media. The problem with sand or silica is that it leaves a rough surface that you're going to need to at least skim coat. Walnut shells or soda leave a smoother surface.

At some point, I'm going to have to get a blasting cabinet or build one. Right now, I am relying on a hired blaster, electrolytic rust removal, Evaporust, Krud Kutter, and the wire wheel.
