Shifter Linkage

This is the linkage bracket that I have:

I've installed a 4L70E and the trans shifter connector isn't exactly across from the pivot rod coming off the frame.

My question is if there is a little play in the hole on the bracket that slides over the pivot rod does the rod and the connector HAVE to be directly across from each other?

My plan is to drill/dremel a slot in the bracket to slide over the trans connector.

Additional question if anyone know:
I want to insure the transmission is in "park", would twisting the shifter rod counter clockwise (top of rod towards front of truck) all the way be "park" or would twisting the rod clockwise (towards rear of truck) put it in "park"

Thanks for any help
