Re: BBC temp creeps at idle; how did factory do it?

Although you don't seem to have an overheating problem, I'll throw this out there for future reference.

If you ever decide to upgrade your heavy duty Hayden #2747 fan clutch, the correct Hayden severe duty unit is #2797.

See the link in post #6 above for differences & basic specs.

I went from the 2747 to the 2797 before I finally tumbled onto the high flow thermostat. When the 2797 wears out eventually, I will try the 2747 again, as it is nearly brand new.

How do you know one from another?

Thanks for the replies, ya'll. This thread has really gone in depth and I appreciate it.

Has anyone tried adding an oil cooler with a thermostat controlled electric fan?

A coolant recovery radiator cap has a gasket outside the one that seals the radiator. It sits right against the outer sheet metal of the cap.

I have a transmission oil cooler on my truck, previously installed by my FiL. But it sits up at an angle behind the bumper, with little exposure to the wind. I considered putting fans on it, but now that I have the engine temperature controlled better, I'm thinking that I may not need to do that. Transmission temperature closely follows engine coolant temperature on my truck. Did you ask about an engine oil cooler? I don't have one, but maybe someone else does and can answer to that.

Re: BBC temp creeps at idle; how did factory do it?

Just for documentation's sake, I replaced my original style 4 core brass radiator with a new unit from speedcooling--this new radiator has two cores that are 1" long each.
https://speedcooling.com/1967_1972_C..._Radiator.html

It behaves the same as my first post highlights. I'm gonna guess the 4 core I removed was working perfectly fine.

I am going to abandon my heat creep issue and install A/C and see what happens. Part of my plan with the A/C is to install a pusher fan in front of the condenser to help lower A/C temps and maybe help with engine temps.
The saga continues.

There is nothing wrong with your coolant temps.

True. 205F is far from the realm of damaging a BBC. FWIW, I've had mine to 260F when pulling a 6000 pound trailer up steep hills. I found the best relief was a high flow thermostat. I'm sensitized to the thing running hot, as a result, so I bought a bigger fan and made my own shroud, just to keep the temps down. But this truck has always run hot in the entire 41 years of my experience with it (we inherited it in '09). If you stopped for gas, you'd better plan on having lunch, because unless you left it running, it won't be moving off the pump block for at least half an hour.
