Any tips for restoring old glass? Water spots won't go away.

I'd like to clean up the door and rear glass in my truck so that I can see through them clearly. It looks like water spots and they are so layered it nearly hazes the glass. I've tried a few different methods but haven't had much luck, even with scouring pads and window cleaner.

I have used polishing compound , I bet others will have a better idea.

Use 0000 steel wool with glass cleaner. Keep your work area wet. It will also take off oversprayed paint and most other contaminants.

Toothpaste is supposed to work on glass as well

jewlers rouge, I worked in a glass factory, LOF when I was young and they had a deptment that was called scratch polish and thats what they used. with a bit of water. hope this helps, BROWN 70

I’ll second the cerium oxide. Final grit for rock polishing mixed with water, stored in a pill bottle. Give it a shake, wet a paper towel, rub a bit until it’s gone.

I used it to remove deposits on old lab glass and bottles but did use it on the truck, too. It cuts pretty fast for being so fine. No haze at all, leaves a very nice finish. Also, no wax or oil carrier= easy cleanup.

I used 0000 steel wool with "Bar Keepers Friend" Cleaner & Polish powder with water. Like Truckster stated keep it wet. Picked them both up at the local Home Depot.

I tried the Bar Keepers Friend and 0000 steel wool but didn't have any luck...

I guess I'll order some of that cerium oxide.

Try CLR. It’s made to remove calcium, lime and rust without the risk of damaging your glass further. It was the only thing that removed water spots from a boat I purchased after trying several other options.

Water spots, total dessolved solids, left to long can actually etch the glass. You have probably cleaned off most of the hard water spots and are looking at the etched glass.

That looks more like acid rain damage and not hard water (calcium carbonate) deposits. It will take polishing the glass to remove the acid etching.

If it is calcium carbonate deposits, they will dissolve with some white vinegar (acetic acid) Try a small area first.

Look closely and make sure it's not age marks in the laminate...no amount of polishing will get those out. I had a windshield that appeared to have overspray (or fogging) around some of the edges, but it turned out to be moisture between the glass layers. a few years in the rafters and it disappeared. I was going to use it as a patina'd windshield as it was aged very symmetrical, but I could not risk it taking on moisture again and not being symmetrical.
