Re: 1st Project: 71 C10 SWB

Hey RCbowtie69, Nice truck! looks like it doesn't need much work at all, just a little on the doors.

Here are some pics of the door repair progress, be easy! it was my first time welding...Started with the doors in case I completely mess it up I can at least buy another door and fender before I do any welding on the cab.

Bought the inner door bottoms but didn't need the whole panel, just cut out the section needed that way I didn't have to involve removing the interior panel holding on the door nut plate assembly.

Re: 1st Project: 71 C10 SWB

Mounted the door to check the fitment on the inner door bottom alignment. The patch panel required trimming along the door skin mounting flange to match the existing flange so I wanted to check to see if any other adjustments are required before I install the outer door skin. Just received new tool for door skin installation and can't wait to use it. link for tool is:

Hey RC, I had planed on spot welding the skin. I haven't done much research on the adhesive. I'm open to recommendations, have you heard good things about the adhesive?

Hey 67-72, Thanks for the complement. You and me both. I was hoping when I started, that I would be farther along by now, but doesn't everyone....

Very nice project. Very similar to the 69 project I have milking for the last 2 years almost. Just curious where you picked up the gas tank? I would like to find one like that, I just don't want to kill the project for price. thanks, subscribed.

Hey Mcbassin, Thanks!
I picked up the tank from Boyd Welding. He is a vendor here on the site. Link provided. They did a very nice job on it and they hold group buys a couple times a year for board members.

I've heard the adhesive is like a seam sealer,& better,so you going use the air tool on your door skins,it looks like it would make it easy if you use the adhesive.Hope to see pictures soon.I don't know what the drying time is on it,in which could be the draw back, thanks for the pictures, looking good.

Hey Mcbassin, Thanks for the kind words. I'll keep the pics coming. I took off work this week just to get progress done on the truck, so hopefully will have something completed.

Hey RC, Thanks for the support. For the skins, they are Goodmark brand but I picked them up at a swap meet.

Re: 1st Project: 71 C10 SWB

Hey RCbowtie69, I have made more progress on the rust repairs.

After cutting out the rusted area and marking the patch panel and cutting the new section from the patch panel, I lined them up the best I could to spot weld to the door. As you can see from the pictures that the new panel doesn't match up perfectly and will require some manipulation once spot welded on the flush areas.

Re: 1st Project: 71 C10 SWB

Here are some pictures of the replacement panel welded in (be easy on the welds, I just started). I have completed the door skin installation on both doors and all went fairly easy. Also, the door skin tool I referenced earlier did NOT perform as advertised! I checked and used recommended air inlet pressure, watch the supplied video and followed the directions as best I could and it didn't even try to fold over the door skin "lip". Good news is, I researched the door skin adhesive RCbowtie69 mentioned in previous post and it worked great. Long enough cure time to allow skin installation via hammer/dolly and get mounted onto cab and lined up to "set" with proper alignment to cab. I will take a few more pics of the how the door bottom panel matched up to the original door on the inside. I'm no body man, but I think it was not too bad of a job to dolly the panels to make it appear that there was no difference.

Started working on front fender trouble spots at this time. Still want to get more experience before attacking the cab corners, cab supports and rocker panels.
