EXHAUST: We ordered a MagnaFlow 2 1/2" stainless system from Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-16643/ for a 1972 Chevy C10. We knew it would need some modifications to go over the rearend with the air ride and connect to the LS3 but it gave us a nice base to start with. I got some stainless flanges from Yoshi fab http://yoshifab.com/store/ to hook up to the LS3 manifolds.

The LS3 motor does not have a fan so you have to install a radiator with electric fans. We went with a radiator from Be Cool http://www.becool.com/ and these guys were very helpful and knew exactly what we needed. Their radiator is already set up for the fans to kick on at 210 and off at 190 which is the temperature operating range for the LS3. They offer polished but we just went with natural finish.

We upgraded the guages to Autometer http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugeop.aspx?sid=18 but still wanted to stay with an "old school" look so we used Designer Black guage series installed in a Boese Engineering http://boeseengineering.com/ dash insert. We have not decided if we are going to anodize, paint or cabon fiber cover the insert yet.

The truck did not have a radio from the factory and I knew whatever radio we installed was going to put in the new console so we installed the air ride controls where the factory radio would have been.

The truck console came from Classic Truck Consoles http://www.classictruckconsoles.com/ which again like the exhaust was a good base to start with but we knew there would be modifications for what we wanted. I chose a B&M shifter that we got from Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80885/ that would work with the new 4L85E four speed transmission.

Thanks. I wish I had the time, knowledge and tools to do the build myself like most on this board but I did enjoy sourcing out most of the parts. It was unbelievable to me the availability of parts for these old trucks...totally cool!

The guys at RJ Race Cars www.rjracecars.com have done an awesome job with this truck. It is pretty amazing that this truck was delivered to Rick's shop on September 3rd and the amount of work that has been done so far. The biggest problem was me making decisions on what I was going to do and keeping him supplied with enough parts so his guys were not waiting around on me. I also got the armrest from Classic Truck Consoles which was a good base but we still had to do some modifications for what we wanted. We installed the window controls behind the shifter along with the drink holders.
 The door unlock we put in the armrest.

I found the radio I wanted from Best Buy and shipped it up to Rick so it could be installed in the console.

So now everything comes apart weld up the air ride brackets and the frame along with several other parts are off to be powder coated. Rick's guys will assemble the body back on the frame and start body work next week.

Rick got the frame back from the powder coaters this weekend and his guys will now assemble the body back on the frame to start body work.
He powder coated the frame the same color that he does the chassis on the race cars he builds which they call 30%....basically satin.

Thanks for all the compliments and ya it took me over 5 years of looking at it sitting in my garage to finally decide to do this build. My brother who collects old muscle cars (I think 5 at last count) still wants to kill me for doing this build and not doing a frame off back to original.
I have not decided on a color yet so any suggestions are welcome. |

ok.. love the build.. what made you change the a/c compressor local after you cut the frame for it( first pics it's down low, pass side.. then it's up top where a 71 a/c truck would have the fridgedair compressor???
other than that does the frame rails need that much notch on both sides? I've heard that the gto front engine dress fits better in older cars... than the f body/vette set up's |
