Montana 70 Short Box

Hey all, just picked up this 1970 Short box from relative, it's been in his family since 1992 and not driven since 94. It's been a LONG process trying to get him to part with it, after some serious negotiations (and beer) I was able to bring it home. Actually we installed a fresh battery, added some gas fired it up and drove it onto a trailer!

Next up is changing all fluids, brakes, hoses and ultimately interior. I am also adding a set of 15x8 6 lug rally wheels. I would like to know the best way to attempt buffing out the paint to preserve the patina.

Thanks for looking!

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

Upper trim only, shortbed, two tone, base model... with buckets. Cool!!

I would rock it with the steelies and caps at stock height.

Congrats!

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

wow, buckets. Nice. Welcome. That paint looks sound enough in the pics to do a light buffing out to bring it back to almost new. Screw patina, that's restorable...
It can be done by hand, but results are usually better and more uniform with a buffing wheel. Relatively low rpm, using a buffing compound (not a rubbing compound or anything that abrasive), and don't machine buff the corners/edges - tape em off and do this by hand. I'd actually do the edges by hand first. And be careful, constantly moving and no pressure, let the wheel do the work. Anyway, lotsa threads on here if you search. I've rubbed thru some paint by hand once and was ready to harry carey myself.... so be careful. If it had any obvious rust, you could use CLR on it and then wash it off - but I don't think is needed with this truck, just looks too nice.

And I second the motion: stock steelies and PO3 caps with stock ride height, then save your $ for a set of seat covers from Tim at Truckseats and redo the interior. Add 10 gal of gas, and enjoy.

Real nice truck, looking forward to seeing how it comes together. I'd say it's beer well spent!

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

Thanks for the tips guys. I was absolutely looking for a way to polish the paint before anything else so Jocko's info was great. I attached a couple more photos of the SPID tag as well as the metal tag on the door jam.

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

I don't think I've ever seen a swb SPID with wood floor ordered (I'm sure there are some, I just haven't seen one). Cool truck.

So much awesome in just a couple of pics. It's also funny how great it looks vs. the truck in the background.

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

well, if the one in the background is owned by the same relative, he had great taste. Nice paint combo on both.

Re: Montana 70 Short Box

Thanks guys, the yellow truck in the background was "thrown in" as part of the deal. He got it to pull the power brakes, power steering and 5 lug hubs. I haven't hauled that one out yet. It is extremely rusted out, but will be valuable for parts harvesting. Thanks
