Petronix Ignitor III ?
Hi Guys,
I just recieved an Ignitor III as a gift for my 71 short bed. Can I use my stock coil and do I need to remove the resistor wire? Thanks! |

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
You must be a man.!!! The pertronix directions that should have come with the ignitor 3 should say to delete the resistor wire and recommend a specific coil resistance range, and usually recommend one of their flamethrower coils with a specific model number. Also, they should tell you over and over not to use solid core spark plug wires. Check out their website as well for more info. Good luck, and let us know if it improves how your engine runs. I'm about to put a Pertronix Ignitor 2 in my 50 GMC firetruck with a 270 inline six. Hopefully it starts easier. Jim

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
LOL.! I have the box right in front of me, very limited instuctions. Nothing about the resistor wire. Why did you choose the Ignitor II over the III?

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
They don't make the Ignitor 3 for inline sixes. Very limited number of V8s so far.

we put an original pertronix in my son's 68 elco 10 years ago.
best thing since sliced bread, you won't miss points

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
Ok, I went down to the Auto Parts store and asked if I could see the instuctions "mine were missing". Sure enough, you must remove the resistor wire. Now I'll figure the best way to do that!

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
Here is the installation of the ignitor I and II modules. The pertronix III is different because the module is different but the installation is similar. it is a rev limiting module and there are instructions online and at the pertronix website for how to do that. Most guy won't need the P-III unless they are racing.
From what I have found, if the coil requires a ballast resistor or a wire resistor then leave it as is and just wire the red module wire to positive and the black wire to negative on the coil. If the engine stutters or misfires then the red wire will need to go to a full 12 volt key on source. ...........

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
Thanks for the video!
Ok guys, is there another spot on the fuse box to get 12 volts with key on other than IGN UNFUSED ? I already am using that for my Holley electric choke. Thanks! |

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
You can just pull the resistor wire from the terminal box and replace with standard 12 gauge wire, The resistor wire is to keep from burning up the points with full voltage. You can get the terminals from NAPA.

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
There's a couple of ways to get around your dilemma.
You can wire the electric choke off the windshield wiper yellow power wire at the wiper fuse and pull 12 volts off the ign-unfused terminal for the red wire. Or you can replace the resistor ignition coil with one of the 12 volt colis that do not require resistance. If you remove the resistance wire from the firewall connector you will burn up the coil. The resistance wire's primary purpose is to lower the voltage to the coil so it doesn't overheat. It helps to save the points because of the lower voltage through the points to ground. When the points break the ground connection is broken and an arc is created between the point surfaces which is what causes the pitting and burning between the surfaces. This is controlled by the condensor which absorbs the voltage while the points are open. It completes the circuit between the coil negative and the ground while the points are open, much like a capacitor does in the electronic circuits. If I were using the pertronix I would try to use the stock coil and just run the red wire to the module on the positive side of the coil with the wire from the ballast ressistor or the resistor wire and see if the engine runs ok, or if it runs rough and misses, and then I would worry about the resistor wire and the coil.

Well, do you have it in and running?

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
I had one on on a 1970 Monte Carlo....it was way superior to messing with points and always adjusting the dwell. All in all, it still doesn't beat just using an HEI but its still worth it.

Re: Petronix Ignitor III ?
I got my Pertronix ignitor 11 and coil installed after converting to 12 volts also. Starts very quickly and runs a lot smoother. Also, I picked up a few more mph top speed. I was impressed how much better it runs. I thought my engine was already running pretty well. I think you'll be happy with it. Good luck. Jim
