Valve cover - inline 6 - 292CI

I picked up this valve cover on eBay from Speedway Motors. Only thing is, it has a side port at the front. Does anyone know what that is for and how I could plug it?

Also, the hole in front for the oil-fill is not notched for the cap. And, the hole at the back is bigger than the PCV valve.

Well, I found a plug for the side port and a grommet for the PCV valve; just need to find a filler cap. Or modify the cover and try to make the old cap work.

Has anyone found a different oil filler cap? Would be nice if it was chrome.

Look for a push in type cap.
That side port is for fresh air into the motor for pcv to work. A hose runs from the air cleaner to it.
I’ve seen push in breather caps used instead of your plumbers plug.

Yep, cover is for a later (70's) motor with PCV. They used the plug so the air was drawn from the air cleaner via the side port, then into the intake via the rear top PVC valve.
Takes a standard 70's OIL rubber plug. You can plug the side port it you aren't running a PVC, but you should run one, or a breather that plugs into the PCV port.

I’m not happy with the chrome cover, going to run it for a while, but I think it’s going to leak. Cheaply made.
Oh well, at least I got my valves adjusted.

Shiny but generally cheaply built.
Much better with an aluminum cover if you can find one.

I use the PCV system -- even though I have an aftermarket intake and carb -- by running a hose from a grommet in that front/side hole thru an elbow to a anti/backfire mesh and into a hole in my aftermarket 12'' air cleaner. PCV valve is plugged into the rear/top port on the valve cover and returns to a 3/8'' port on the front of my Edelbrock 1404 carb.
Theory is: clean fresh air is sucked into the valvecover forward baffle thru the air cleaner. Hot oily vapors are sucked out of the rear valve cover thru the PCV valve and into the carb, where they are reintroduced to the Air/Fuel mixture and burned.
Seems to work OK.
