I can't remember if yours is the same or not, but check with member EdB. He is redoing a 3 OD for his truck right now. He has dug up a lot of info on whichever one he is working on.

Question Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

I have a question , if I just put this in my truck without the wire's hooked up to the two solenoid's ? will it shift into overdrive and just stay in overdrive all the time ? or will it just not shift into overdrive at all ?

it seem's you need to build a wire harness to make it work like the passing gear function on an auto

has anyone got a diagram how to just wire it up to an on off switch ?

I am not worried about it working off the gas pedal like a passing gear , I just want it to stay in overdrive when I need it or with the lockout cable be able to make it not go in overdrive ,

here is one diagram I found ,,,

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

That is a non-syncro GM 3spd with a borg warner R10 over drive,, the round thing on the driver side is the engagement soleniod, it should had two wire connections, one goes to the power relay the other goes to the governor on the other side of the trans, (it kicks the trans out of overdrive under a certain speed) the lever on the drivers side mechanically locks out/engages the overdrive

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

You have to at least wire in the solenoid or it will just freewheel,
All you really need to do is run a wire from power through a switch and to the solenoid,,

Question Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

more question's !

OK the governor switchs to ground around 30 mph to make the circuit and kick the solenoid in , I got that ,
checked my solenoid and if you put power on the big headed screw it kick's in and hold's just fine , but what is the other screw terminal for ?

I am going to rig me up a relay that will be turned on by the governor ,

also I can't put it in reverse if it's in overdrive ? is that right ?

one last thing when I put power on the solenoid spin it and let it kick in the transmission will only turn one way it locks if you try to turn it the other way untill you take power off the solenoid then it spins both way's ? is that ok ?

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

The other connet is probably an auto disconnect, maybe hooks to the clutch or brake. I would think with that one it only works when you are in 3rd gear. Just a guess though.

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

I do have one of these. It appears that it is the same as
yours. I did research and have a lot of info that I can send
you. I have the manual and another diagram beside the one
that is posted earlier. You will have to PM me to set this up.
I found a lot of places that wanted to sell the manual but
one site had it posted so I copied and saved it.

One issue is the front housing: The hole in my bellhousing is
is larger than the one for the earlier od transmission. We had
to fabricate a ring for the earlier housing so it would fit. I will
attempt to put in some pictures to show this. The part #on
the od housing is 3741458. The part # on the later housing
is blured but appears to be (09)20740. The numbers in paren-
thesis are the ones that I can't read. The od housing measures
about 4 11/16" and the later housing measures about 5 1/8".
The ring makes up the difference. Your bellhousing should be
the same as mine. The bolt patterns are different.

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

That other smaller screw is for the wire that goes to the kickdown switch on the carb.

I'm not sure if the non-synchro unit will go into reverse when it's in o/d, but I believe it will. My synchro unit will. On mine, when I shift it to reverse, the reverse lever inside the transmission side cover makes contact with a rod that is attached to the o/d unit and it locks out o/d. I believe yours is the same.

It sounds like yours is working okay.

I have the part numbers for the NAPA relay and relay harness connector that will make this unit upshift and downshift like it did from the factory. The relay is AR109 and the harness connector is #207900.
There are 5 terminals on the relay, but you will only use 4 of them. I have the diagram somewhere showing the correct terminals to use. I'll have to dig that up.
The kickdown switch will mount on the carb linkage, and there are several on ebay this week. About any 4 terminal kickdown switch will do the job.
I purchased my cable from 5th Avenue Internet Garage, they have a nice website and if you have questions, you can give them a call, they're good people. They know overdrives!

If you need a complete wiring diagram on hooking this up with the kickdown switch and the relay, let me know, but with the diagram you posted earlier, it's not difficult.

One other thing you'll want to remember. When it is in overdrive (cable pushed in), and you shut the engine off, make sure you put it in reverse. If not, the trans. will freewheel and forward gears will not hold it, the truck will roll.

Good luck and keep us posted!!

I've wondered if you could rig up something for the kickdown using a TH400 kickdown switch?

I read elsewhere you could use a headlight dimmer switch and mount it to the floor next to the other dimmer switch..

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

If you can find the 1961 passenger car shop manual the Over-drive transmission information is there.
I have the 1963 Shop manual supplement and it just references the 1961 manual as it states "the information in the 1961 passenger car shop manual will therefore apply."
I found one page of the manual to post here. I also posted some wiring diagrams. Google is my friend.
Cheers

Re: Need help ! I got the 3spd overdrive transmission today !

I used a Studebaker kickdown switch for my 63. Works just the same as the Chevy switch for a much better price. My plug at the switch was in poor shape anyways, so it didn't bother me to change the wire terminals. The relay should be easier to find than the switch if you're staying with GM. You can occasionally find them on Ebay

Since this thread's already been revived, I'll add that a 1967 C10 4 Speed bell housing has a 4-11/16" hole which *will* accept this transmission snout without any adapter ring. 1968 switched (from the SM420) to the SM465 4- speed which is a 5-1/8" diameter snout. I don't have the experience with 3 speeds to say if other bells will work.
