I definitely am pleased with 16 mpg. Maybe I could make it a smidge better by really diving into some carb tuning, but it runs so good at the moment that I have no desire to start turning screws and messing up what I already have

That green 64 still has the correct Fawn Metallic interior. Pretty much exactly what I want my truck to look like paint wise. It's going to be a long process, but will definitely be worth it in the end.

Re: Frankentruck

The previous owner's booger welds failed on the seat back stopper. For the past month or two, I've had to hammer the piece back straight every once in awhile to keep the seat from leaning too far back. Decided to pull the seat this afternoon, clean up the old welds then add my own booger welds. Should be good until I decide to swap out the standard seat for a deluxe seat.

A local show for this weekend. Frankentruck always bringing down the collective value of the surrounding cars and trucks

Gotta drive them whenever you get the chance!

Re: Frankentruck

Today's been a day, both good and bad.
The good:
Went up to Auto Metal Direct for a cruise in and had a great time with friends. Saw a good bunch of cool cars and trucks as well.

After that, I made tracks east to swing by SouthernParts' place to do a little parts swapping. Some new wheels have been acquired for Penny. Can't wait to get those cleaned up and polished. Going to be a lot of sanding going on

And the bad:
Frankentruck's overdrive unit made loud, crunching noises with overdrive engaged on the way out to Woody's place. Had to stop and lock it out of overdrive to make the rest of the trip to his place and back home. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do about it. I have 2 of the overdrive transmissions and the standard trans I pulled out, so I could use all 3 transmissions to rebuild one, good overdrive trans. Another option is to switch to a 5 speed at some point. For now though, I'll probably be swapping the standard transmission back in so that I can continue to drive the 63 until I get the 81 driveable again and then pull the 63 off the road for extensive rust repair.

Re: Frankentruck

Big sad

I can hear a crunch from the overdrive when I rotate the input shaft, so the trans needs to come apart to really see what broke in the overdrive unit

Re: Frankentruck

Sorry to hear about the OD unit, hope you find something really easy and cheap to fix in there. Love the slot mags you picked up.....I have a bit of a hoarding complex with them but I still keep my eyes out for a set of 16.5x9.75 8lug's though.

The cheap, temporary fix cost me less than 10 bucks. I kept the old 3 speed that I pulled out for the swap. Bought a new output shaft seal, swapped the slip yoke on the driveshaft that I had also kept, and slid it back in yesterday.
I probably won't dig into the overdrive for a couple months at this point. I'm not in a rush to fix it at the moment.
The slots need a good polish, but I think they'll clean up well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't have much of an issue swapping the old 3 speed back in. The "guide pins" I made to install the overdrive a couple years ago proved their worth again yesterday.

The old 3 speed sounds like it's got straight cut gears in 1st and 2nd, but not in third. I added fluid until it came out the fill plug hole yesterday before going for a test drive. I still need to check if it needs more after running through all the bearings and such. It has been sitting dry since I pulled it.

What I don't remember is if the gear noise was present the entire time I was driving the truck with the old 3 speed. I've done a few things here and there since swapping it out that has reduced the overall noise in the cab, so it's quite possible that the overall cab noise while driving was drowning out the gear whine. Now the cab is much quieter, so the transmission whine is more noticeable.

Whichever way it is though, I'm going to run that transmission until it either blows up or I park the truck for the extensive rust repair. Fun stuff!

Re: Frankentruck

Nice to hear that the truck is rolling again, maybe you'll come across a nice 5 gear for the truck.

I've thought about a 5 speed swap, but with the expense involved and all the other related changes for the swap, it's more likely that I'll be rebuilding the 3 speed with overdrive

Just been cruising around town and doing some parts running. The old three speed does just fine around town, but man, I miss my overdrive. I'll fix it eventually

Re: Frankentruck

Bought nice things, yes that with the overdrive is a nice thing. I had a T5 WC in my Mustang and it makes long drives a pleasure.

Noise in NOT 1:1 is usually a cluster gear bearing issue.

Good to know, thanks. I'm not too concerned about how much life this transmission has left since I'll be going back to the overdrive transmission once I rebuild it.

Just my suggestion.
Put all those extra Transmisson parts in a small (Clear Tote).
You will thank me later.

I probably should! At the moment, they're all stuck to the two overdrive transmissions I have sitting on a bottom shelf dedicated to transmissions

As long as you know where they are

That is the Key.

When you get older /
like me.

It's like where did I put those parts .

Looking forward to the rebuild when you have time to show more about this Rare transmission.

I will definitely be sharing the rebuild whenever that happens. But at the moment, with everything I have going on, I'm probably not going to start the rebuild until next summer, or longer, depending on when I start the cab rust repair

Glad you've been driving the wheels off the ol truck man. Sucks about the transmission. Ya might look into the T5 swap as they are pretty common and cheaper. If not I'd take out a loan and get a tremec. Cost me 2400 about 6 years ago when I got mine for my 66. lol

Drove it again this evening. Just short trips around town to do stuff, but it sure is nice to have the Dakota as my daily to work and Frankentruck as the fun truck for after work.

I've decided that I want to rebuild the 3 speed overdrive. It's just too neat to not to.
I do want a tremec though, so there's a possibility that one might find a place in Penny instead. Penny is more of the "hot rod" truck while Frankentruck will be staying with the stock-ish farm truck look.

Re: Frankentruck

Drove Frankentruck to C10s in the City today. Great time and lots of cool trucks. Saw this sweet 65 and am really considering building a set of side boards for Frankentruck. I think that would work well with the farm truck look I have going on.

Also hit all 5s earlier this week

I glad someone else pays attention to the Odometer Reading.

Those side boards are cool.

If you build Side Boards like those. / I got One Suggestion.

Well maybe Two

Well maybe Three

It would be Sawmill lumber sanded down.

I would use Sqaure headed bolts / So it was Era Correct and look like a Farmer done it.

I would also use a Forstner bit, so the square bolt heads did not stick out.

That would be a High tech farmers touch

Glad you had a Great time at the show.

Thanks for sharing the Pictures.

Tbone1964 hooked me up with a good odometer roll when I had him refresh my speedo. Maybe it was pulled out of a low mileage farm truck? I wouldn't be surprised if the cab and frame have over 150k miles on it

Re: Frankentruck

Yup, still driving around town and going to car shows and cruise ins.

Frankentruck will go back to daily driver duty on Monday for a week or two as mom's Civic got hit on the driver's front yesterday. It was enough to bend the front suspension but not enough to pop the air bags. Thankfully it was low speed from both vehicles and mom is good. Mom gets to drive the Dakota with A/C so I get to sweat on the way home from work

I've also started studying for the 4th and final CPA exam, so not much time to work on the trucks much. Can't wait to get that last exam done though!
