Metallic paint with a satin clear
Will the metallic show up?
In other words, if I choose a metallic silver color, but have a satin clear coat applied, will it still look metallic without being shiny? |

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
I really like metalliacs with satin clear over them. I dont know why, but it really pops. I have played with the idea of repainting my truck Satin Silver with a ton of metalliac in it. I have seen it on a few rides, and it looks soo sick.

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
Thank you for your replies.
The guy at the paint store said that the metallic would truly "disappear" if you don't put a high gloss coat on it. |

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
paint store dude is absolutely correct ... you WILL lose some of the metallic with a satin clear ... just by the nature of the "satin" sheen being more "milky" than a gloss/glamour clear.

There is no glossy finish on the paint, and the metallic shows through beautifully after 4 coats of matte (they didn't have satin in stock so for this simple test, matte proved my theory just fine). Using the dark silver that I mixed up, it almost looks as if my test subject that I painted is raw metal when the light hits it. |

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
I like the idea....I love a glossy paint job but a satin metallic sounds pretty sweet!

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
What I did is a pretty pathetic garage test using my smallish hand airbrush. Let me try and get a good pic of it tomorrow in the sun. It may or may not turn out, but I'll try. Good thing is that I had the pro painter who's going to paint my truck (it's a '50) look at the test and give me the thumbs up, so I'm stoked that it will work.
I've been wanting to do a matte finish paint job this whole build, but after further investigation, there are A LOT of plain'ol matte finishes out there. Especially in black. I'm hoping that this idea takes me in a another direction without losing the spirit of the early 60's period hot rod that I'm after. Sinister looking, with black steelies, wide whites, air ride, oil rubbed leather interior, and a lot of chrome. |

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
Do you have a build thread? I love your plans....have you considered a white roof since you're doing the wide whites?

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
I sort of have a build thread going. I just found these forums recently and my intro thread (which was likely in the wrong place) is kind of a build thread. I have one on another site that is a little more detailed. I'll PM you a link if you're interested.
Everything is mocked up now. The frame and all other chassis components will be torn apart for sand blasting Monday, so that is where I am with the build. We'll be done with it this summer unless something big stops me. |

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
Here is one I found to give you an idea of what a flat metalliac silver looks like. I have no idea whos truck it is, but it is killer.

Re: Metallic paint with a satin clear
it will look just like basecoat without clear, except sealed. Will have an opaque look to it.

I haven't painted a car in years, but I do spray quiet a bit of "flat" lacquer on furniture and cabinetry. The flat we use is 15% gloss, which has a ton of flattener in it. The stuff looks like skim milk in the can, literally. As the coats build up, you can see darker colors turning gray. There is a point of "too much".
