Re: live Mecum auction trucks
The angles make these look like toy trucks.
Wasn't this the same auction that had a 73-80 with a buckled hood? There's some pics of that truck that are making the rounds of the facebook squarebody groups.

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
You are correct sir. The price on some of these trucks are bringing more than a vette. That red one looks like a retro-mod. Looks like new glass along with everything else being new from the pic. I need to borrow some money grumpy, if I get chewed out for getting another truck, at least I won’t be alone…lol

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
I was watching that auction the other night. What was the deal with that Squarebody with the buckled hood? It still went for silly money. My guess is it was a cheap aftermarket hood and a stiff spring.

If the hinge isn't lubricated perfectly(none of them were), the hoods would invariably develop a crease in that spot. There's a specific way to close a 73-80 hood to reduce the stress on that spot. I don't know what it is specifically, but I think it has to do with pushing the hood back toward the cowl as you close it.

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
Not all the factory hoods buckled if the hidges were lubed properly . My burban never buckled . People dont remember that LOF was lube oil and filter you were suppose to lube all the hinges locks ect when you changed the oil . We used to lube everything at the Shell Station I worked at in high school . Even sprayed the bushings with Ru-Glide I still do
The hoods on many cars did this too . Take the Chevelles early 66 like mine had 5 cutouts they changed it ear,y in production to 3 to stiffen the hood . Myoriginal isnt kinked in the middle like alot of them 67 they changed the hood completely.

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
You'd drop the hood standing on the side. Main thing was lube. It would be hard to close from the side if not lubed

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
I am very disappointed in myself for missing the Dallas Mecum. I try to go every year as it is only about 35 minutes to Downtown Dallas for me. For $ 20.00 or so, you get to see mass quantities of great vehicles.
After looking at the results of the Dallas show I am reminded that you never know what any of the units will go for. Just looking at the C10s, some went for less that I thought they would, while others took home much more. That's the way is rolls for most though. If you have never been to one of these you should...at least once. I usually go on Fridays as most of the early sold cars are still there and all of the weekend cars are. You get to roam around and inspect them all. The people watching is just as good a the classic watching. |

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
Do you actually make money restoring to concours standards? All these look pristine, but if they are not acid dipped or whatever to get rid of the rust, is it possible to get a headache? Still cheaper than a brand new luxo-barge.

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
It's kinda fun to see trends in the resto-mod world. You can spot a project done in the 90's a mile away.
What's with all these '90's cars and trucks being collectors now?? Am I just getting old? The mid-20's guy who bought our 99 4runner recently, commented "I just love these old smaller SUV's" while checking it out. In his eyes it was a classic.

Re: live Mecum auction trucks
Yesterday, a guy around my age said that my 95 Dakota was an old truck and that he liked the "old" trucks. I guess it kinda makes sense because by the time I was starting to drive in late 2014, some cars from the 90s were already older than the new group of drivers. A lot of my classmates from high school had cars from the late 2000s or early 2010s as their first car. A couple people had 90s stuff, but I was the only person that somewhat regularly drove something older than the 90s. Also, I think that the people who started driving in the 90s and had some 90s dream cars are now looking for those grandma or grandpa driven, garage kept vehicles that they've wanted for so many years
When I think of old trucks I think 60s and 70s, but then again, I have a truck from the 60s and 90s
