daily driver died today

Well, my daily driver died today. All my anti-freeze is now mixed with all my oil.

I only got 50 grand miles out of the rebuild. Disappointing to say the least.

I guess it's time for the V-8 conversion.

I just put a new clutch in it last week, and acquired a bunch of upgrade parts for it. Bummer.

Head gasket or head I figure.

Re: daily driver died today

Is it a 4.3? I would say pull the intake manifold. These are notorious for being rotted out around the water jackets. I would do a leak down check or compression check first to make sure. But I have surfaced alot of manifolds off of these things. gasket goes and then all the water is next.

Bummer.... I miss our little s10. That thing was a runner.

Good luck with the engine choice, as you have a fresh blank slate.

Re: daily driver died today

Since you already have cool parts for a 2.8, Why not get another?

An LS1 5.3 would be very cool though...

Nice looking Blaze!!!

Hows life on AWACS?

AWACS is life as usual. I was A.D. 7 years, mostly worked ISO/PHASE Inspections, 1 year in Mission Simulators, and 1 year flightline. Now I'm civilian over at Depot. I'm getting tired and bored of AWACS. I'd rather not turn wrenches at work anymore - I'd rather save that for my hobbies.

Did you spend time on them?

Re: daily driver died today

No, I did a lot of time on B-52s, F-16s and A-10s though. I actually miss the flightline. I got to admit, It can be a rough place somtimes. I was a weapons loader, expiditer, flight chief, and then a production super. I didn't do any time in PHASE. When I retired, I ran the Armament flight.

Re: daily driver died today

I'm hopin I read that 50 grand as 50,000 miles and not 50 miles out of the rebuild.
Well, since ya aready have the cowl hood ya might as well put somethin worthwhile under it! LOL

Nice little blazer. Reminds me of my 90 Jimmy, except alot nicer than mine.

I have mount templates for v8 swap if ya need 'em.

50k isn't much. I would second the intake option. It would be worth a look at least.

Re: daily driver died today

A 5.3L and 4L60E complete with computer and wiring harness would be good swap.

A 4.8L with 5 speed manual combo while more rare is also out there if you want to stay with a manual transmission.

Re: daily driver died today

yeah, I keep hearing that, and heads/head gaskets. Either way, the anti-freeze is has already damaged the seals and bearings, so I'm screwed. I want to just throw another 2.8 and go, but not if it's going to happen again. Besides, if I'm going to wrench, I'd like to upgrade to the v8

Re: daily driver died today

Well, after almost 2 weeks of searching ebay, craigslist, and a couple of forums, I found a donor V8 conversion. It's an 87 jimmy with the conversions already done. The parts are all there except an electric fan and a good steering column. I got a decent deal. Now, I just need to hunker down and get greasy.

Re: daily driver died today

What years is your Blazer? I'm curious what your going to do with all the 2.8 stuff. I am trying to hold off long as I can before I do a V8 swap in mine.

1986 TBI 2.8 with 4 sp. MT

i have no use for it, so I guess I'll try to sell it. Everything is new or replaced within the last 4 years. This is my baby and my daily driver, so everything was right on. I guess I could find a 3.4 and switch it all over - but why? I need to liquidate and maybe offset some of my swap expenses.

What parts do you have? Hey another question, how are the window channel rubber on your parts blazer? I need a drivers side if you want to see and are willing to.

Re: daily driver died today

Well, here's an update. It's been slow due to 2 knee surgeries since Dec. 4, but I get a little done here and there.

Ordered the Corvette Rad/Dual SPAL elect fans, motor mounts, and the JTR manual first.

Cleaned, Painted, and Detailed the 350 and 700R4 tranny that came out, added an 88 4.3 accessory drive setup to the front - serpentine belt baby!

Ordered Evap/Heater box plate - modified box - applied plate (burned up my dremel in the process)

Modified Firewall

Deleted all the Manual Tranny assc'd crap

Ordered a tranny lockup kit from TCI

Modified Radiator Support to mount Rad in forward Position - ordered new mount pads and core support mount kit (LMC)

Bought a 92 Typhoon Center Console/Shifter assy online (thanks Mark) it's freakin awesome.

Performed Test Fit

Cleaned, wirebrushed, and painted engine compartment area.

Will perform addt'l firewall mod this weekend and attempt to start final installation.
