65 to 87 front disk swap BAD wobble when braking

Hey all,
I swapped the front disk set up from an '87 truck onto my '65 c10...took everything but the actual crossmember...I know I need an alignment but when I brake I get a BAD death wobble that doesn't go away after I let up off the brake and I also have a pretty bad wobble from about 45mph and up.

Any guesses what I screwed up? Haha

Thanks, love this forum...

I would start with an alignment first. If you've changed the arms, spindles, etc, you really need to get it aligned before driving it very much.

i'd make sure rotors are not warped, triple check bearings, make sure that the castle nut has a retaining pin.

Do you feel the wobble in the pedal or the steering wheel?

Get your alignment done first. that's the best starting place.

when you grabbed the 87 stuff, did you replace ball joints and tie rod ends?

Re: 65 to 87 front disk swap BAD wobble when braking

The rotors *LOOKED* almost brand new. So no resurfacing yet. And I ordered ball joints so I'm waiting on those, and I truthfully didn't even think about replacing the tie rod ends.

I went yesterday to see about getting it aligned but the shop wanted to charge me $1100 to replace a bunch of stuff first. So I supposed my next step is to start replacing ball joints etc...

When I check the bearings what exactly should I be looking for?

And I feel the wobble in BOTH the pedal and the steering wheel.

Thanks for all the help so far

If you question the inner and/or outer bearings and your unsure of their age, just replace with new. Your life may depend on that.

Re: 65 to 87 front disk swap BAD wobble when braking

lift the truck so the front wheels are off the ground.

Grab the tire and put your hands at the 3 and 9 o clock positions. Shake the wheel side to side. if you feel any play, or movment, you likely have bad tie rod ends.

grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o clock positions, and do the same. Any play here may indicate bad bearings.

grab a long 2x4 or prybar and stick under the wheel. (it helps to have a helper here) lift the wheel and check for movement at the ball joints. If you have up/down movement, ball joints are worn out.

Re: 65 to 87 front disk swap BAD wobble when braking

Thanks for all the help everyone...I guess the good news is that none of these parts are too crazy expensive...truth be told it would have probably been a good idea to just replace this stuff from the beginning anyway...oh well, you know what they say about hindsight...

Thanks again, I'll try and remember to update when I get all this stuff knocked out.

check the tires too . if they are old radial tires they could have broken belts .
if they are old radial tires and you switched them from side to side this can cause the belts in them to brake and then they will wobble really bad .
radials should never change the direction they rotate , even more so when they are old and been rolling one direction for a long time .
