275/40/17 tires on the front.

A friend of a friend has asked me if I am open to swapping project trucks. I have a 65 Chevy G10, and he has a 1990 Silverado extended cab. With the mighty 4.3, but it needs a motor.

He knows I have a set of early 90's Bord Coddington 17's, and as I have said before I can recreate my "high school" truck. I graduated in 92 so it fits even though I have never owned one.

The wheels are off a 1992 Corvette, and the fronts are 275/40/17 with the rears being 315/35/17. I measured the the rear, and I could make it work with mild surgery. OK major surgery. Which would be easy for me.

But what about the fronts? Is there any hope with a 3/5 or a 4/6 drop. Or does that require tubbing the front. Which I am not comfortable with on a smogger truck.

I have seen people run 265/35/22's so with the right offset. I think it will be OK, but rub a bit.

What say you?

Re: 275/40/17 tires on the front.

A 275 is a 275, no matter the series or rim. I ran 275/60s on a truck I built years ago, had a 2-3" up front with no issues. Went to 17s all around, ran 255/55s up front, no issues. I have a 98 Tahoe that is about 3" up front with C5 vette wheels with 255/55s on an 8.5" wheel, no major issues, but had to run a thicker spacer cause the inside of the wheel rubbed on the upper arm. I cut a coil, but if I went with a spindle then think it would be fine. Gonna put 275/50 up front when I get some extra money.....

Re: 275/40/17 tires on the front.

Even if the 275/40-17 fits you may not want to run it on your truck. The wheel arches are so large that the small 25.66" diameter of that profile may not be to your liking.

I have them all the way around on my 68 Camaro on a 9.5" wide wheel so when I was building my 89 C1500 I stuck one in the wheel wells to see how it looked and I thought it looked goofy. I ended up with a 245/45-20 on my truck instead since it had a nearly identical sidewall height to the 275/40-17 that I liked for a similar look but the 20" wheel gave it 3" more diameter to fill up the wheel wells much better.

Just something to think about.

I literally just changed my rear 275/50/17's to 255/55/17's today because 275/50's cannot be bought new. Nitto made nt450's and 555's, 555's last and they discontinued them as well now.
