Re: 71 K5 Build

Picked it up from a guy up north for 800 bucks... it's got the usual rust in the rockers and I don't even know where else yet because one of the previous owners decided putting bondo over the rust was the best way to fix it :P I really don't think it's too bad though... I think the bondo might have actually slowed down some of the decay over the years.

The good news is that it has a newer 350 swapped into it, it's mechanically sound, and runs like a champ.

I will post pictures on Tuesday ",

I think you got a hell of a deal for 800 bucks. What all do you plan on doing to it?

Re: 71 K5 Build

Past Blazer owners love Bondo. You will be amazed what some bondo will cover up. You will also be amazed to remove as much as a 1/4'' of bondo and find nothing wrong underneath.

Re: 71 K5 Build

Yeah, The truck was a steal the way I see it. I'm thinkin' a simple 'rat-rod' build is all that's in the buget. Fix the rust, flat black the whole thing, 3 inch body lift and some 33 12.50's all around. Headers and maybe a cam under the hood.

Maybe do a crate motor, house of colors silver, bigger tires, and some suspension lift if I'm ever rich... lol ",

Re: 71 K5 Build

Judging from the pics I'd say you stole it. I'd have to see the windshield frame, firewall, and the rocker boxes to be sure. Even if those are bad, it is still a good deal. Congrats.

window frame looks solid

rocker boxes look good

firewall has a little rust on the seam down by the floor

other than that it's solid

Re: 71 K5 Build

I have been having some issues with the Rochester carb that came on the truck and the problems seem to progressively worsen no matter how many adjustments I make to the Quadrajet... Sputtering, bogging, backfiring, and I noticed that someone (PO) removed some of the choke parts. The Quadrasuck is probably not really worth rebuilding, so I bought a Holley 1850 - 600 cfm carb for 50 bucks I found on craigslist... only to realize that I'm gonna need a new intake too (I thought I was gonna need one, but someone else assured me that I didn't???) Anyway... 500 bucks at Jegs and I should have her running again (and much better) by next week.

Re: 71 K5 Build

Yep, quadrajets use the small primaries and big secondaries, where a Holly uses the same size. New intake is the way to go, but I do believe they make an adapter plate to make it work.

I need to start adjusting the Holley on my truck sometime now that I got my cooling system working.

Re: 71 K5 Build

A new intake isn't necessary. Any auto parts store should carry the adapters for square/spread bore carburetors, and they should be less than $20. I just used one to put an old Carter AFB on the 72 K20 I drive every weekend.

Re: 71 K5 Build

so, i've been thinking about putting the top back on and ordered some Drip Rail Deflectors from Manes cause the original ones were shot an leaked something fierce... they don't fit... in all honesty they look like the ones everyone else sells, but they must be for a blazer made in some parallel dimension, cause they wouldn't work on ANY 67-72 blazer or jimmy i've ever seen... i tried putting them on any w3ay i could imagine and the holes are too small, don't line up, and the rubber piece hangs down and keeps the door from shutting?? WTF?

just ordered some from GMC Paul's, they claim they are the same as the factory ones, hope they fit.

you can see the center metal piece of the old ones above, in the picture of my windshield frame

they were covered with a foamy rubber.

Re: 71 K5 Build

I bought an Accel HEI distributor with super coil from some guy on cl for 50 bucks, ordered new wires and attempted to hook it up. I'm pretty sure everything is hooked up right, but it still won't fire?

About to put the points dizzy back in :/
