I’m making some videos from my garage and was wondering if anyone had time they could give me some tips on things to do different or things you like. I feel very awkward in front of the camera but hopefully I will loosen up after a bit.

It is nice to see how real people with limited budgets tackle these projects. I found your "awkwardness" refreshing and entertaining. Your comment about kicking over your drill made me laugh. Mine is tripping on the cable to my angle grinder causing it to fall and destroying the disc. Keep it up, I will follow them for sure.

Thanks. I’m trying not to take it to seriously, people always ask what I’m mad about but that’s just the way I look and talk 😂. It kinda fun at this point and something new so I hope it stays that way. I know there are other DIY channels like this but I was looking for another way to share my story. If you follow my videos you will see it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. I’m filming it all, not just the highlights. Maybe everyone will get a kick out of the hijinks I go through when working on something. And trust me, if I’d been using a cutoff wheel I would have broke it also.

Thanks. It makes the average joe feel like they aren’t doing things right when all the social media and tv shows only show the good things. Parts don’t bolt right in, motors don’t fire on first crank and most won’t do a build in a weeks time.

It’s a new thing for you (would be for me if I did it too) so of course it’s a little awkward. Little tip, grab a sheet of paper and note some talking points before picking up the camera. You don’t need detailed notes, just make a little plan for the video and refer to it while recording. “Start at front of frame and move back, then talk about cab floor” kind of thing. You may want to get more detailed or just add stuff you don’t want to miss or leave it more loose and off the cuff.

One thing that changes the tone of a video, a conversation, is not saying “umm, uhh, ahhh”. It’s something I struggle with at times in day to day conversation so don’t take it too hard. I guess our brains want our mouths to spit something out but without having prepped the next coherent thought yet. That’s part of the reason I suggested the note/script thing. Not only can you have the next talking point on the list, you can have a nice transition too. “Next thing I wanted to show you guys” “which brings us to” can be written down helping the brain not say “umm” while you think what to say next.

Keep it up man. I like checking out build vlogs and have thought about trying it out myself. But I don’t need to be famous! Lol

Since I don't know what I'm doing either, about the only piece of advice I can give is maybe "less camera movement". It can induce some motion sickness on a big TV if the camera is moving too much! So for mine I did a lot of static shots put together instead of moving the camera.

Davepl. I’m trying to avoid that to now that I’ve done a couple. Only when trying to show what I’m talking about or my project is spread out over the garage, probably just be better to edit frames together to get the same idea across.

You can tell that your feeling more comfortable in front of the camera. The only think I would ask is, what are you filming with? The video is a little shaky when waling around. If your filming on your phone you may want to look into a gimbal for walking around filming. They range from $49 to $200 on amazon.com depending on your budget. They make a world of difference in video quality. They make them for GoPro and DSLR as well depending on what your choice of camera your filming on.
Keep it up. I dig the "regular guy" videos. That is what I like about Vice Grip Garage on youtube.

Yes I have a gimbal. I had shot that part already but I didn’t hit record apparently. When I redid it I just hand held because it wasn’t a big portion of the video. Thanks for the input.

Keep doing what you are doing, I think you're doing a great job. You will certainly 'evolve' in your presentation over time as you get more accustomed to doing these.

Thanks guys. It’s getting easier to be in front of camera. Still working on things though. Subscribed Schrum. Dieselwrencher it’s really not difficult these days. I film on my iPhone and edit on the iPad. Pretty seamless. Redrocker, It took a while to get my garage together and it’s still not done. Need HEAT! Tell your boy to just do his best and not go by the tv shows. They don’t show you all the mistakes 🙄. Main thing is to have fun. All hail Lemmy.

Not sure if I should’ve uploaded this one yet. Not sure if I should try to do each step or combine more things into one video. What’s better for most people. The detailed filming or the quick time lapse? I’m trying to make it easier for someone that hasn’t done this work before but also don’t want to bore anyone that knows how to do it. 🤷🏻
