ok i need ot fire up the caddy motor, been sitting unran for a few months and it needs ot be ran asap again. its on a wooden pallet skid thats sitting on cherry picker legs, i figure if I connect the chain to the picker arm and keep it tight and nail some boards down to straddle the oil pan, it should be decentyl steady enough to fire it up and mildy rev it without getting majorly injured.
only for about 10 seconds is all i need. a couple times throughout the day since alternator and radiator are not there.,

what do ya think ?

Fast, My Uncle is a life-long F**d mechanic and I have seen and helped him start many engines sitting on the ground. Just hold them by the valve covers and don't rev them too fast or hard or they might roll on ya! I just went nuts the first time I saw him do it but it works fine. Make sure the flywheel and all rotating gear are clear so that nobody gets whacked with a fan or something. If you only run it short time it will not overheat.

I wouldn't! I teach a "Small Power Units and Turf Equipment" course (small gas engines). We fired up about 60 engines this semester after overhauls, etc. -- all one cylinder Briggs, from 3 to 8hp or so. I make the students mount them to "engine stands" that we made. Reason is, even a 1-cyl small engine has enough torque to try to move and twist. Your typical V-8 engine has 800lbs -plus of weight holding it down on one motor mount while the other mount (in your truck) keeps it in place against the torque. Trying to start one on a pallet could result in it rolling across the floor -- like an 800lb. kid's top -- not to mention the possibility of some serious vibration damage.

yes, or they will seize up! 80-100% humidity over 300 days a year...
i did it, had technical difficulties with starter, had to build one from scratch thanks to caddy ones not being same solenoid as chevy ones,,, or at least the actuator piston anyways.....

i chained engine to wooden skid and its all on the legs of cherry picker and connected to cherry picker arm, its not going anywhere, it purrrrrs, sounds great and isnt loud at all, has catlytic converter on it and its blowing verter core pieces out the exhaust ! heh

Brennecke is getting a good running big block it looks like, it ran like a striped ape when i pulled it and it still does today.
its a torquer motor!

hell no you dont have to rebuild it lol ! it slapped the big ass 79 caddy de ville limousine around like it was an escort, and that was even with a 2.28 rear axle ratio, its too good to do that to it, there nothing wrong with it except it aint in a truck or whatever, heh' its all there, cept carb cant stay on it, but all it is is a basic rochester q jet, and the starter is one that is homemade built from scratch, i had to do that earlier before beng able to fire her up., you can swap another starter motor onto the nose cone and starter actuator piston, i can give you a good motor actually., did not know the one i swapped it all onto was weak, can give you the one that was originally on it. the solenoid was physically broken was the problem the whgole time, but chevy solenoid no work on caddy unless you swap piston because caddy one is smaller dieameter is all

i gonna miss it now,.. hmm.. looks like we wil meet on the 18th, or ? im ready if you are

Sounds like fun to try. I always just crank mine over by hand a few times every couple weeks while its sitting out. I'm hoping this will prevent it from seizing up.

heres the donor car the engine came out of after i kinda sorta played personal demolition derby with it and a 90 Le Baron, both had no real body damage to speak of before i began the derby, the limo won of course, by far, way less body damage bigtime:

I recently built a motor test stand...welded a bunch of angle iron together and the sturdiest castors I could find to roll this thing around. Mounted a radiator and mufflers to the thing too. Works great! Easy to run it to adjust the timing, valve lash, and check for leaks. My 406 I am building now I am going to run on the stand to break it in. should be fun...rolling around a running small block. hehe.
