Re: 59 Apache/C6 Corvette build

now that is a tight bumper. on the roads around here the body flex would likely cause some scratching.
looking good.

Good point. I agree. Rubber pucks mounted on each fender to prevent touching in extreme conditions will keep it from touching. The frame is pretty stiff, but worth putting in protection.

Hood latch is beefy. Release lever is inside the cab.

LOL. I never liked the clunky factory hood latch, so I went with a Volvo semi truck hood latch with a 360 degree wrap around pin for safety. Smaller aftermarket or common VW latches need a safety backup because it doesn't wrap around the whole pin.

Re: 59 Apache/C6 Corvette build

just the security alone of having the hood release inside would be nice. i've been trying to figure out some kind of hood lock.

Maybe something like this? I had one of these on my last car and it worked perfect.

I'm not sure where to get them. I bought mine on Ebay a few years ago.

I really like all the brazing that happens here. I wonder why that and not just regular welds?

The brazing is only to eliminate body filler. Easy to sand compared to welds. Everything is welded, but low spots can be filled and sanded somewhat like lead. It is a lifetime hold compared to body filler. Now, it will still need a skim coat of body filler before paint, but this will just eliminate any weakness or spots.

Re: 59 Apache/C6 Corvette build

thats what I was gonna say too, long lasting filler. some body guys are not crazy about it but it works. I have seen a few original seams done with brazing on the task force trucks. dash braces, some A pillar areas and around the windshield opening seams

It does add a little strength compared to filler, but I don't think they had any in the 50's. Well lead... It does fill the void with low heat so it doesn't cause warpage like welding.

Re: 59 Apache/C6 Corvette build

I have done a complete teardown on a few task force trucks, like drill out spot welds and take apart to individual panels, and have found that the dash mount tabs on each side at the A pillar were brazed, the A pillar window doglegs were brazed, some of the windshield opening parts were brazed. not sure but it sure looked factory to me. I have also seen some old bodywork on these trucks that was done in brazing. I remember back in the 70's when I was learning to gas weld with the torch on body steel I would braze sometimes because it warped less and was easier to grind, it does plug up a grinding disc easily though, no flap discs available back then.
