Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

What you have is a short C/30, which is the longest pickup. Makes sense, right? See, C/10s come 115" wheelbase (SWB) and 127" LWB. C/20s come only 127". C/30s come in 133" and 157". Only 133" could get a pickup bed, and only single wheel. The wide beds got a 6" extension to the front to make up the wheel base difference, making an 8'6" bed. Chevys are called Longhorns. But you got a Stepside. The Longhorn was a new idea for '68. But the 1t Stepside has always been made. They only started calling them Stepsides in '58 when the first Fleetside came out. Before that they were just Chevy Pickups

Awesome! I have always wanted this truck and I am keeping it for utility so I am happy with the bigger bed.

I cannot wait to redo the wood bed and throw full sheets of ply in the back. I'm planning to make the bed out of cedar then process it shou sugi ban style and coat it with Spar varnish. I will have that 9' bed looking nice in no time.

Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

I'm glad you are excited about the jumbo size bed. The 67-72 C/30 pickups are the last of their kind. They are a fairly rare configuration of these trucks, largely unappreciated, and going all the way back. I call them the Big Boys. I want to end up with one from any of the years '72-back for a gentleman farmer truck. That's one truck I would want to do 100% original. Good example are hard to find anymore

Yes. I am going for the original worker look. I do a lot of woodworking and this will be my lumber getter and will take me and my stuff to an art show every so often. Check my stuff out on Instagram if y'all want. I will be posting more pics on there of the build than on here probably.

Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

Just wanted to add one thing to Tim’s list on trucks and wheelbases. The C20 could also be had with the 133” wheelbase. It too was a Longhorn in the Chevy line. I parted a C2500 GMC 133” wheelbase years ago for disc brakes that I put on my 127” wheelbase truck.

You got some great advice from a lot of guys here to figure out what is wrong first and then throw money at it.

Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

Great thread, I saw a truck like yours for sale near me a couple years ago and I was pretty sure that it was a fake, or that some well meaning owner duded up his C20 with C30 badging. Only after some searching did I understand that these were actually made by GM. I think it is safe to call yours "rare" especially in the condition it is in.

It is your truck and we all agree that you get to decide what to do with it, but I bet you can get the original engine running without too much trouble. If the wiring harness is chewed up I have great news: there aren't a lot of wires in that harness!

If it is the original six cylinder it will be a 292, great engine and sought after. Even if you proceed with an engine swap it'll be worth it to you to sell the old one as a runner.

Anyway congrats on a great truck with some family history to boot. Keep us posted please.

I like my C/20 Longhorn for the carrying capacity. I'd love a long bed step side as well because I don't care for the camper shell causing lack of visibility. Plus, they are just too cool. I went and looked at your woodworking examples. You do nice work! I also do wood working and wood carving, recently making a large and small tool chest, and a carving bench. I see you did some fractal burning. You are a braver man than I! Are you a member of any wood working forums?

Thanks! My job has me doing high voltage work all the time and my setup for the lichtenburg machine is a completely hands off, remote operated system that I put together. Much safer that what you see most of those guys doing.

I dont do any forums for wood really. I am usually a trial by error type and with woodworking your'e not really trying to find exact configurations that work like you do with trucks.

Cool! Every once in awhile there will be a notice in the news about someone getting killed. One forum I frequent has a guy that moves the probe by hand- with insulators of course. It's gonna bite him, one day. I'd also like to thank you for your service!

Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

Super wood work! I'd love to get one of those for my son and I can 3D print the pieces.

As to your truck I cannot wait to see more photos. When you make the trip to retrieve keep us Arky's in the loop. Not sure the path you would take but I know there are at least two members in Harrison, Boog is in Searcy, and I'm just down the road in Beebe.

I usually travel for work but this is my third week of not travelling. My job falls into the "essential" category since I support power plants, food plants, etc. but right now it's all on the phone and email. I'd welcome a reason to get out of the house.

We will all be biting our nails until we see some photos of it cleaned up.

Get a GoPro and make a video of when you power wash that truck. People REALLY get off on that sort of thing. It's like power washing porn!

I guess I should have pointed to them by handle for a new guy. Davischevy and KMC3420 are the two members I know that are in the Harrison area. Me and Boog got the area just NE of Little Rock covered.

Re: Truck sitting for 30+ years

Hey Mike, oh yeah and thanks for rounding that up. I'll add that the C/20 Longhorn came about by using a C/30 133" chassis. There are no 133" C/20 Stepsides.

That's some goood woood! I like the free-form, natural, live edgy type stuff you've done. I guess the shows are all on hold now. I too play with wood and aim to get into doing shows. In my present location I have no woodshop. I have to move the tools out onto a slab only on fair weather days. That goes against my motivation. My next place will have a dedicated shop I can step into and go to straight work.

This is a great thing, this truck and you, having the family history/connection, it being the perfect fit for your purposes, and you appreciating it for what it is and rolling with it.
