Replacing seal on steering gear

Have you guys done this while the steering gear is on the truck? Or, do you guys take it off?
It is probably a little difficult to get at it while laying on a creeper.

Re: Replacing seal on steering gear

Can anyone tell me which seal goes in first? One seal is thicker than the other.

Re: Replacing seal on steering gear

This is the guide I used, from Tx Firefighter
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard//...d.php?t=619634
The order from outside in is snap ring, flat washer, thick seal, washer, thin seal.

Re: Replacing seal on steering gear

I came to the conclusion that my input shaft is leaking, not the pitman arm shaft. I read in this post below, it is possible to replace the input shaft seal without disassembling the entire gear. Is this true?

The procedure for replacing the seals without disassembling the entire gear is in the guide from Tx Firefighter that I gave the link to.

Re: Replacing seal on steering gear

The most common leak point is the o-ring on the adjuster plug and not the input seal.

While I knew guys that would replace that o-ring on the truck, I always felt better doing it on the bench. There's a few important steps that have to be done just right for the box to work properly again.

Re: Replacing seal on steering gear

I removed the steering gear since I could tell it was leaking at the input shaft seal. Hopefully, the seal kit I get will work.
