Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Had not mentioned it before as it was upcoming but this past Saturday June 5th the Mrs. and I celebrated our 50th anniversary together. Not too bad for a young couple that met on a blind date way back in '71. She was 17 and I was 22, boy where did the time go. As all couples do we had issues and had our moments but we worked thru them because we wanted to. Since it was the 50th we splurged more than our normal weekend anniversary get-away. Rented a mid-size SUV and headed out to Colorado for a week. Durango to be specific, to ride the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge rail. Had a real blast, Old time steam engine, open gondola and 3 1/2 hour 45 mile trip one way thru some beautiful scenery. Will post a few more pics as I get them down loaded from my cellphone. I'm slow at that being technically challenged as I am, LOL.
First pics are some old classic iron we seen parked around downtown Durango. Since this is a truck board thought would start with trucks, LOL. First is a mid 30s (?) Ford on a 4WD frame. For Sale in the window no price that I could see. Don't know much about Ford four wheelers but it seemed it was on a 1/2 ton frame. Really a nice looking rig. Member Rickysnickers ID'd the Ford as a 1939 model, thanks for that Ricky. Think the Suburban is a 62, not sure. Was on a 3/4 ton 4WD frame with 1/2 ton fender call outs. Body swap for sure. Not show but a nice looking rig that showed it was driven. The front bumper/winch looked like it was built for use. Wish I had checked it out further but the Mrs. was more interested in visiting some of the local shops. Both were nice looking rigs for the area and looked like they were built to be used on something more than an asphalt parking lot, LOL.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Lastly on this set is a 57 Chevrolet convertible that was parked outside one of the local shops. Full Bel Air trim with the "Fuel-Injection" script on the fenders. Would sure loved to have had a look under the hood. Full on custom interior with a full length console, custom gauge panel. Nice looking ride. Later while we were walking around seen it going down the road with the top down and a couple inside enjoying the day and the ride.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Congratulations Sir, on you and your wife’s 50 year mark. My wife and I will have our 30th on July 27. It does take work and there have been ups & downs. Those are the things that make it stronger. Hope you all have many more!

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Congratulations on your 50th. We're about a dozen years behind you.
The Durango and Silverton is a fun ride. My wife's not so fond of it, because she's afraid of heights.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Happy anniversary!!!
Coincidentally, we also celebrated our anniversary today... our 53rd! Where did the time go? We immediately hit the road headed to California for our first jobs. On the route we passed through much of Colorado including Durango!

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Congratulations of 50 years. Here in Maryland any vehicle 50 years or older can get permanent antique plates. Not sure if the same applies to marriage

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Congratulations! That is something to be proud of and it sounds like a fantastic trip.
I've been wanting to do that exact train trip for years now but it hasn't made it to the top of the to do list.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
The wife and I are pretty close to 50 years now. We've been together since March 1971 and married since 1975. It really doesn't seem all that long when you get along.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Good work on the 50 years, and sounds like a cool trip you took. I have ridden that train, but I was pretty young and didn't really appreciate it. Would be fun to do again, and I look forward to your pictures.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Thanks all for the kind words and thoughts. As I mentioned, we have had our differences over the years but we worked thru them. Sometimes got a bit frosty in the house but warmed after a period of time, LOL.
Adding a few more pics. The steam engine was built in 1902 for the standard rail gauge and converted to the narrow gauge rail in 1928. Did not think at the time to look at the front of the boiler to see who built it. Listening to that engine chugging up the grade and blowing that old steam whistle was a real treat. In the ticket office I took these pics of a couple of old pot belly stoves that were on display. Sure were cool looking, love the black paint and the chrome look of those. The boat is a 1939 Owens "Sea Craft" 17 1/2' Run-a-bout as they called it. Purchased new in 1939 and donated by the family of the original purchaser to the rail museum for display. Beautiful boat, reminded me a lot of one my folks had when I was a lad and we were living on the Texas Gulf Coast. It was a 1947 Garwood Run-a-bout with a Chrysler marine engine of some sort. Same mahogany style planking, stripped deck with a mid-hull engine and rear seat. Folks sold it when we moved from Texas as Dad did not want to pull it with our station wagon. That would be like owning an early C1 Corvette in the boat world now. Don't even have a clue what it would be worth in today's boating scene. Last pic for the time being is a display poster of the ride attraction. Just looked pretty cool hanging next to the pop belly stoves.

Thanks for the tip Rickysnickers, now I can edit that with the correct year of the truck.

Re: Mr & Mrs. Ironhorse-50 Years
Congratulations...We celebrated my Dad's 80th birthday last night. My Mom and Dad have been married for 57 years. They also met on a blind date.
31 years in September for my Wife and I. The covid put a damper on our 30th celebration. I consider myself very lucky that it has been a very smooth ride. |
