Lady has a set of four never been mounted tires Im interested in. It sounds like they were delivered to her by mistake from Amazon and I guess she got to keep them (thats the story anyway). They have been laying in her garage stacked flat since the lockdown started. My guess is the tires should be fine, Id have to check the date on them, but the paperwork supports here stories timeline.

A new set of the same tires isn't a whole lot more than her asking price, hundred bucks max. I forgo having to pay sales tax, but I do lose any warranty.

Probably OK, or dont bother?

If she’s not got any money in them offer her half half what a new set would cost. If she won’t bite on cash in hand then I’d let her keep them. Warranty would have cost you more if you bought new but chances are you can’t even buy it now.

X2 not a good enough deal as you still have to have them mounted and balanced. We all know how much shops like mounting tires they didn't sell. If they were half price go for it.

Finding the tire manufacture date on EACH of those tires is important!

Do you know where the date is on a tire, and how to read it?

If you can mount them and they are a cheap tire then why not. Talking under $400 for a set. If they are going under a project I don't see a problem either. Personally I buy almost all my tires off the internet and just mount them myself and never worried about a warranty. The cost savings is usually enough to cover a tire failure out of pocket. I haven't paid to mount atleast my last 6 sets of tires.

Any more, if they're over 7 years, I won't even mess with 'em. Had one of the BFG 35's let go on the truck a couple of years ago while towing the boat. Granted it was REALLY old. Dodged a bullet on that I thought.

Just last year about this time, gave my trailer spare to a friend that needed one. Knew it was right around 7 years old and told them. Had never been used. 20 miles in, it scattered, leaving them stranded in 100+ heat for 6 hours. felt like crap over that one.

At 5 years now, I start looking real hard at them whether they have miles on them or not.

For an extra 100$, I'd feel better knowing that my lady didn't think I cheaped out on her ride.

Trying to buy US made as well these days. The whole "China bomb" is an actual issue Ive found.

The date is key.

Make clear the concern for tire age, not buying from a dealer with warranty, and motivation to buy private comes from a substantial savings. As mentioned, it's all windfall profit for her. If she doesn't budge it's time for you to move on. I would offer half the cost of new.

I say half price of new also.

Also a friend of mine that had a tire changer and balancer at his house always told me,

Always be careful buying tire with (Two) holes in them.

If you cant get them at 50% or so off just buy new. I bought tires from tire rack for my 85 . They came with 2 year road hazard and the factory warranty intact . Doesn't matter where you buy them if you have a defect just contact the manufacturer and they direct you to a local dealer . I got two tires replaced they were coopers I bought from discount tire online took the car to Mavis a local tire shop they replaced them no questions asked other than I had to show the purchase date .

I'd check the date and offer a little over half as well... if they're within a couple years old. Anything older and I'd pass, I live is SC and the sun it brutal on tires here unless you keep your vehicle garage and keep the tires wiped down... but who does that on a DD?

A co-worker is a friend with a Michelin Employee (Michelin owns BFG now) I got a set of all terrains for about $250 less than retail. They were literally days old when I got them. They smelled so good

I run Michelin 10 ply ltx on my 95 GMC 2500 Z-71 daily driver. They are fantastic tires , But if I replaced them based on age vs tread depth / condition they would still have over 1/2 of the tread left on them . They are 70,000 mile tires . The last set went to 90,000 miles and I gave them to a buddy who put them on his Chevy , Yes, I drive like an old man

I always tell them that they are free to hold out for a better offer, but I can only offer them what the item is worth to me. BTW, what size are they?

Old tires, what a bummer. My travel trailer has maybe 200 miles on it, but the tires are 5 years old. I'd put them to use on a yard dog trailer, but I'm going to put new tires on the trailer before I take it on the highway again. Too much at risk. Same with the tires on my truck. They have only a few more miles than the trailer's tires, but are coming up on 5 years old. Again, not worth the risk. Going to be an expensive camping trip coming up.
