Tire advice

I am trying to convince a young man who has an 83 shortbed to not change the wheels to aftermarket with newer bolt pattern. I would like him to keep the truk stock. He thinks replacement tires are too expensive and wants to change.. I did research and his door panel states size of 275/60/R15 I think a replacement tire of 235/75 R15 is in his price range to keep the stock rims. Are there any pitfalls in recommending this to him? I am sorry if this doesn't belong here but I am 75 and he is in his 20s and this was his Dad's truck. any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Tire advice

275/60-15 =28x10.8
235/75-15=28.9x9.3
about equal...
so about a inch taller and inch narrower on the 235s....
"newer bolt pattern"?????.....changing to newer rims won't affect the bolt pattern...
tires alone will be cheaper than new rims and tires...

Re: Tire advice

Chevy sold a truck with 275/60r15's? That's news to me. It must have been some kind of special truck. I see kids ruin vehicles so often I hardly notice any more. Oh I get it now. He wants to change the bolt batter to 4 3/4 to get a wider selection of wheels; more trouble than it's worth. I'm sure some magazine probably did it and others want to copy it.

Re: Tire advice

You’re right Al!
No 275’s on an 83.
Only truck like that was the 1990 SS 454.
Somebody with better bifocals needs to check that label again!

Re: Tire advice

My 82,k-10 came new with the 235's, on the 8" wide ralley's.
And,I use 225's on my 84,short,wide bed.
He must have read it wrong.

Re: Tire advice

thanks to all who responded. he also would have to use adapters I presume that again adds to the price. His father was a good friend of mine and if this 'kid' gets bug up his r....r I: want that truck. I will personally view the door specs on the tires....but he say that the 60' is what it said. Glad to hear the normal original size is 235's.

Re: Tire advice

it could have been 60s but that doesn't sound right for the factory tire...could be though....I'd vote against wheel spacers unless absolutely necessary. ..

Re: Tire advice

Factory would not have been 275/60's for a square body.

Wheel & tire options are a personal choice that can be reversed. Using adapters to get a different bolt pattern is an easy way to make changes as well as to un-make them. But, adapters usually jack up the back-spacing requirements which can/does impact the visual look.

What size wheel/tire combo is this young-gun talking about?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Depending on size & style, these days 20's aren't much more than 15's as a package. 15" tires are no longer the 'cheap' tires because the sizes are outdated vs. new cars. I recall my buddy recently just handing over $150ea for BF Goodrich Radial T/A's for his son's 70 El Camino.

Re: Tire advice

A rim that fits 275's won't fit 235's.
Change the rims if he wants. Its super easy to change back. Its his truck now, it should make him happy not you.

Does that mean a 235 won’t work on a 7 inch rim.

And I agree. It’s his truck. Let him live and learn.
