Door repair on 1969 c10

Is there any easy way to put a backing plate in the door that the hinge bolts are pulling through?

I thought there was a backing plate in this location from the factory.

Can you give us a photo of what you have?

The fine thread bolts can be replaced with coarse thread bolts many times with just running a coarse thread tap through where the stripped out fine thread bolt was located.

Make sure you have the tap running perfectly perpendicular to the door shell or you may not be able to get the new bolt through the hinge and get it to engage the threads well.

If tapping for a coarse thread bolt won't work then you can install a Heli-Coil thread repair insert into the offending locations. The tap size for this is larger than the coarse thread tap size by quite a bit so you don't have to worry about not being able to install the thread repair insert after trying the coarse thread bolt approach first.

Another option is to weld up the stripped out hole then re-drill and tap for the original fine thread bolt. I had to do this on my Malibu where some of the factory bolts broke off in the door shell and the body tub. The removal process oversized the holes too much so the best approach was to weld up and start with new metal. I made a drilling template that registered off the adjacent good holes so I could get the new holes drilled in the proper locations.

Can't you just put a nut on the inside?
Although I agree with 68TT as his method would be a proper repair.
Some do not have the tools to do such a repair. The only reason I mention this.

The factory plates are there in the holes are not stripped problem is the metal of the door is rusting through and breaking out. I was going to try to use a lager plate for now and replace the doors next year. The delay for new door is reflected in the name my wife gave my truck. THE MONEY PIT

Is your door hinge old and rusty? Is that why the door broke where the hinge bolts to the door?

The doors crack out when prior owners let the door go against the stop built into the hinge. I have had a few C10's with this same issue. I would recommend pulling the door and getting it welded up. If, after it is welded up, you don't let the door swing into the stop it will last almost forever.
