solution that make fender bolts look new

I had a gallon of this solution about 15 years ago that when I cleans say the fender bolts and bolts under the hood made the bolts look like they did from the factory. does anyone where to get this solution? thanks Rick

I don't know what brand you are asking about, but try full strength simple green and let them soak. Does really good on metal and bolts if they are not too far gone.

Re: solution that make fender bolts look new

This was a clear solution that came in a gallon bottle and once you had cleaned the bolts you put them in this solution and it made the black like the original bolts

I need to look at that stuff. Simple Green will take it down to bare metal and it really looks clean.

Re: solution that make fender bolts look new

Black oxide is not that tough. It is basically colored rust.

Here is a brief rundown on the process

I had a jug of something that turns rust to black oxide. I think I still have it. I'll go look. The name keeps trying to come to me but my mind won't allow it in

You can buy a pack of 25 on amazon for <$15. I bought a pack of them and the mating speednuts due to the amount of breakage on my rusty junk.

Exactly , I just don't understand all the time and chemicals let alone the labor and mess of trying to restore old rusty bolts ? If it's a special bolt that's not readily available brand new , OK , But , Why bother with the common assembly bolts ?

Re: solution that make fender bolts look new

You know how original bolts get. Not exactly rusty, they just have a bit of some rust on them. They look dirty, used, not good enough to put up against fresh work. I have always saved original hardware when removing parts. I'd rather keep my trucks and Harleys original as I can by simply dumping a can of bolts in a solution, let soak a while, hose of, and let dry. It's easier than making a list and ordering for me. You can use a gallon of solution for a multitude of rust removal, including body parts. I'd imagine buying all those bolts would cost more than a jug of ... HEY!! I think I remember the name. Was it Ospho?

Yep
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/12...g?v=1645706736

That stuff worked really well

I had this stuff somebody gave me and he didn't know where he got it. It was clear. I never could find it sold anywhere.

I had removed a sliding rear window and the window flange on the cab was pitty rusted on the lower sides, corners, and across the bottom. I brushed that stuff on there and it turned it into fresh metal color, every nook and cranny.

if you decide to use Ospho read this thread before buying it . it's a process not just soak and go .

Because of the cost and time with logistics, supply shortages( assumed, and we know how that is ) and demand.

Caswell plating is the company you most likely would be looking for.

I think Evaporust leaves a fairly dark phosphate looking coating.

If someone feels the need to clean nuts and bolts and deal with the chemicals and the mess that goes along with it I can probably help you out with some more .

Correct. I didn't get into finishing them, just the topic of rust removal/cleaning. It's really not the big deal you want to make it out to be. I've been using OEM bolts all my life, since before the internet when supplies became so available. When I started doing frame-offs it was 100% correct restorations, and not just these trucks. It's just the proper way it was always done in the restoration world.

The only hardware I paint is the bolts that get body paint on them. You should prep new bolts for paint as well. I also think that guy makes a bigger deal than it actually is. Overkill is being safe for sure. I've never seen any problems with paint after using Ospho. When I store the hardware after Ospho I spray with mineral oil to prevent rust flashing back.

I guess I never searched that Auto Tech Rust Prep. I found it online, even the same label after 20 or so years. They improved the spray head. Mine's pump spray and it stopped spraying. It's not clear. This stuff made rusty metal fresh raw metal color

Re: solution that make fender bolts look new

I use EvapoRust for my seat tracks and all the hardware. I let everything soak overnight, sometimes longer. When I get them out of the bucket, I rinse with water a blow dry them with the air compressor. The bolts then go into a cup of oil. The seat tracks I do repaint.

I use an old crockpot filled with apple cider vinegar. Works great on all rusty parts that are no longer in the local junk yard. Then just primer and paint.

Re: solution that make fender bolts look new

White vinegar will remove the rust and what's left of the coating or plating. I follow that up with a baking soda bath. It's tedious, because you have to wire brush them down to clean metal.

Caldwell's cold black oxide & sealant makes them sharp, but I only used that sparingly for parts I hadn't had zinc plated. They'll look bad unless they're completely down to metal with no sign of rust or pitting. As Grumpy said the black oxide (cold) is not so corrosion resistant, you'd be wasting your time in a rust prone climate.
