Identify Distributor type?

Hey all, I have never had to do anything to a distributor before, and I did not install this one in this 72 C10. Searching the web has been confusing to get a straight answer, and there isn’t any company markings on this distributor. Can anyone tell me if they believe it is a points type or HEI? Any other info you need? I “think” it’s HEI, but need to be sure. Thank you all

That's an HEI.

If its a GM HEI it will have a part # stamped on the perimeter just below were the cap sits. Then you will be able to determine what year it is.

75/80 HEI the red cap is aftermarket.

They pretty much work or they don't with little in between from my experience. You change the cap and rotor every once in a while, check the advance weights to see if they move freely and aren't worn out where they go on the pins and make sure that the wires on the pick up coil are in good shape along with making sure the vacuum advance works.

The modules either work or they don't there isn't any in-between.

The wires on the pickup coil can some times fail due to being flexed when the distributor plate moves when the vacuum advance works. Usually the insulation is still holding on and quite often they work part of the time.

The only real issue on a 67/71 is if you go cheap and use a female slide terminal rather than a correct connecter to hook it up. The female connector can get loose and loose connection and from my experience that is usually in the middle of the night in a rain storm.

On my 71 with a 350 it was worth right at 2mpg and a lot easier starts.

Something you should check though.
Check the wiring to the bat + connector on the distributor.
See how it’s hooked up.
It needs 12v to it.
