That way the cash drawer would never be "short." Somewhat clever but a bit ballsy. He eventually got caught and fired, even they there were no cameras back then. In fact, he might have been arrested.

This could also be done by ringing up only part of the items brought through checkout by an accomplice. I worked at another job where a co-worker was explaining scams like this to me, and wanted to get my help. One of his "selling points" was there would be minimal if any jailtime.
Some places around here have a sign the states if you dont get a receipt you order is free. Guess it would come out of the employee's pay.

It could have been worse. It could have been pennies.

Re: I caused a back up at the drive through today.

I noticed yesterday at Home Depot they have a sign at the register saying due to the national change shortage, "please use exact change for cash purchases". Could be nickles was all they could scrape up.

So this has me thinking. We have a change shortage? We need to pay with exact amount? No we don't. We only have to give the exact amount of change. To make a $8.25 cash purchase during a coin shortage you would need to hand over a quarter, obviously. But why would you have to give a five and three ones in bills? There's not a bill shortage. Considering the situation it would be very appropriate (and helpful) to hand a ten and a quarter of twenty and a quarter. Can't do that? Ok, here is $8.25 all in change. Just trying to help here

Re: I caused a back up at the drive through today.

Home depot is the only place around here doing that . But they still take cash in any amount but I have gotten all Bill's back . If its 9.55 and you give them a 10 the cashier gives you back a dollar . And writes down the transaction because the drawer is short

Really? They just eat the difference? Amazing.

I'm out of the loop because I seldom pay cash.

Why is the government not minting new coins? They certainly are good at printing money.

Re: I caused a back up at the drive through today.

In this area those low on coins signs have been up since early pandemic. I'm sure it must be some sort of conspiracy or something =)

Re: I caused a back up at the drive through today.

I "coined" this phrase off of google and I believe that it is true

The hashtag #GetCoinMoving is back. Because your pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters aren't. This is the Great American Coin Shortage 2.0, and the culprit is—you guessed it—the COVID-19 pandemic. Like during the summer of 2020, there's been a decrease in normal circulation of U.S. coins due to business closures.Aug 2, 2021
