Dog Fight

My Corgi and my Chihuahua got into it last night. No reason. Coco, my Corgi just attacked Sammy the Chihuahua. They don't like each other.

Corgi's are small but very heavy muscular dogs. Tough little guys. My tiny Chihuahua didn't stand a chance.

I tried to break it up. Even my 90 pound German Shepherd jumped in the middle and tried to break it up. Good ole Duke. He didn't try to hurt them and he certainly could have. He was really just trying to get them to stop. I could see that.

Sammy walked away bleeding. Not badly. He just got his azz kicked. He seems fine now.

They seem to being to establish some kind of pecking order. Coco is the new dog. But she has absolutely no fear. She is very aggressive. Even with the big dog. He is very docile. She chases him.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to get rid of a dog but I don't want the fighting either.

Re: Dog Fight

It sounds as you are laid back and the corgi is trying to be the alpha in the family.

Re: Dog Fight

Same thing happened to me yesterday, but with a different species. #306, a nine-month-old Jersey heifer, was upside down in the feedbunk! She's looking pretty hen-pecked, and yesterday was no exception. The only way she could have gotten in that position was if someone "chucked" her.

Just from my experience with cows, I'd say let them duke it out, and establish the pecking order. But then again, cows don't go for the jugular like dogs do.

Re: Dog Fight

Years ago my hunting buddy had a average size springer and my dog was a rather large black lab. Every fall on the first hunting trip they had to get into it. My lab was very mellow. The springer not so much so he would come after my dog. My dog would pin him to the ground, and just lay on him and growl. They went thru this every fall.
My buddy came up with the saying "I've got 10 dollars on the black dog" in regards to who might win the fight.

My Corgi goes after my German Shepherd too and he will just pin her down. He doesn't fight with her. He just sits on her. I should have tried that with my ex wife.

I have wrestled all of my dogs to the carpet at least once. When I tell them "No" they stop their crap.

I never, ever, have laid a hand on any of my dogs.

I actually praise them for barking at the neighbors and anyone NOT to be in their area. UPS, Fed EX , anyone....

I agree. I think my German Shepherd has protected my house. He scares people off. He has a vicious bark. If I didn't know him I'd be afraid of him too. My gardener is terrified of him.

But he's a well behaved dog. I have people over all the time and all he does is bug them to throw his Frisbee. He knows when it's cool. If something is funky then watch out. He's not mean but he's protective. I'm going to have to get the gardner a Frisbee.

Re: Dog Fight

Be careful who you let into "their area". They become less protective.......

Fed ex, The mail man etc get no pass. My family can walk up to the front door without a whimper

YOU need to pick and choose who comes through you gate, and not just the uniform

Re: Dog Fight

Our latest yellow lab is small only about 55 lbs. But his bark is about 110 lbs. Great dog. would never bite anyone. He might run off with your sandal if you took your shoes off in our house.
Great pheasant dog. Loves the cattail hunts. On the big geese we have around here he can't pick them up but he will pin them down waiting for me. When he does that he has the best smile on his dog face.
