Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I remember a Christmas Eve in the early '80s where this type of front came through. It had been exceptionally warm before an arctic blast hammered in dropping temps 60 degrees, as I remember. I think it went from 70* to 10* the day we left for my folks' place, which is in the mountains where the weather is always more severe. We had rain that froze everything up tight. I remember my brother-in-law was there in his diesel Rabbit and we spent hours dragging it around trying to get it started, gelled fuel. Had to find someone with a garage to put it in for a while. What I don't remember is any kind of news build-up to the event. It was worse than what we have coming now. Not saying it isn't a good thing to assure people are prepped for it. Just very different these days. I got a first time ever e-mail from my homeowner insurance company about storm preparedness. I've seen winter storms before and remember what is important to know and do. But thanks for all the reminders. To me it is about making sure others around are ok, to at least consider the ability of those around you. It's the kind of thing that makes having neighbors helpful.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Mark those metal cans are great. I have one like that one in 3 gallon size I have had since the mid 80s. It's a blow proof can with that spring loaded lid. If near fire the springloaded lid will burp off pressure as it heats up. It also came with a plastic funnel. Simple and easy, safe.
They are still available online today. I highly recommend them.

Thank! I think they are now hooked up at a campsite. I'm calling them shortly. Not much I can do from here, though.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Woke up to this (looking north) today here in eastern Iowa, it was 24 degrees at around 2am but as of 8am it is 5 above and blowing. Plows are out and doing a great job but the wind is the worst part. Hard to say how much snow we've got so far but at least 3 or 4 inches- enough that I'll have to plow the driveway a couple times to keep the drifts down.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Haven’t put the Dodge in 4x4 since last winter . Did it today and the front axle ujoints are clicking . So I just ordered new spicers for it . Now I have to take the 85 out and do the Dodge . Shouldn’t take long I’m pretty much a pro at taking the front hubs out replaced them twice . I even bought the tool to do it so I’m not smacking on the bolts . But I always seem to be doing stuff on it in the cold

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

You guys can keep that cold cold weather.... we don't want it. In the 47 years we have lived here, the coldest I saw was zero F.... one time only, in 1990 I think.
Our 'normal' winter lows are mid-to-high teens, but we more typically see low twenties to mid thirties.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I-80 between Des Moines and Davenport is 'Travel not advised' due to blowing snow, icy bridges and low visibility. Several wrecks along that stretch too. Looks like a tow ban for about half the state. Its been getting colder as the day goes on, down to -5 and wind is picking up. I plowed my driveway once already and doesn't look like I did anything since the wind blew new stuff across it.

It's going to get windy and a bit more snow tonight. The bright side is that the snow is very dry so easy to plow. -10 this afternoon. Staying close to home.

I lived in Casper WY as a child. when I was in elementary school they didn't let us into the building unless it was below "0". Nope I am not making that up.
Here is the temp there this morning. With the wind chill it was -41 below.

Mercy sakes alive. 2nd day of winter and it's coming in like a lion. Wait, isn't that supposed to be March that does the lion thing?
Temps dropping fast and wind is strong with light snow flurries. Heading down to about 5* tonight.

It's the calm before the snow here. 45* at 5:30 am (right now) with patchy rain. Supposed to start blowing in about sun-up. It's been windy from the SW. They say we might hear thunder when the transition begins.

this is cold laying in, not just blowing through. The highest high in the next week will be Thursday at 47* (they think). Won't go above freezing till Tuesday (37*).

Excitement here this morning. WE are up to 22, which is like -50 in southern terms.

Should get up to freezing later. after lunch. I see my DD truck out there, but I think it will be lonely today.

Now to find my old Yankee clothes.
