Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I guess the only time they waited for glow plugs was when their buddy was starting their 6.2/6.5

Yeah, mine has the dealer added plug-in block heater.

I wait until morning to plug it in when we have new snow. That's why we have the jeep to get to the barn no matter what the conditions. We never even plowed until this year.

A couple hours and the glow plugs and it starts right off. A little unhappy and smoky for a couple minutes but I suspect it would start regardless.

It is easier on them to start warm, but at the cost of running the heat. I drive by trucks plugged in all the time. It isn't worth it. Everything's made to take cold weather

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Well it doesn’t snow where I live. But 2 hours up the hill (Sierra Nevada’s) it snows most winters. We went up and made some memories with the kids at the snowplay.

We met a new friend Jeffrey. He wanted to come home with us. But he didn’t make it.

Well, a heated garage would be nice, too.

Some people just need to be able to go "right now" like volunteer fireman.

It's something of a question around our place when the weather is really cold, like twenty below. If there was an emergency, how soon could we actually get a vehicle started and leave? Especially since our town trucks will go a week or two or three without being started.

Clear and crisp this morning. It's going to be in the 80s, I'll bet. I broke down and bought some long sleeve t-shirts and work shirts. Looks like that did the trick here for getting warmer weather.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I have an area under hemlock trees that only gets sun through the trees. Yet, I noticed yesterday that a hosta plant has sprouted. I guess it's sheltered from frost, but certainly not the sun to warm the ground much. This hosta is delicate and very slow growing. I hope it's hardy to cold weather. I expect that to be coming this spring!

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

That weather around Christmas was as severe as it has gotten. Been a very mild winter above average temps. Only got cold again a week ago for about 48 hours. It's normal to get snow here, but our winter weather has always varied a lot, due to being Mid-Atlantic. It all depends on which way the wind blows. People cuss the snow and I wonder why they live here, since snow is normal. What I cuss is rain from above freezing into the 40s. That is the most uncomfortable weather on earth. I thank people (in humor) for having their no snow prayers met with this alternative. I'll take the snow! We just had rain in the 30s yesterday into last night. A great time to be inside warm and dry. Looks like uper-50s to low-60s all week after that "cold snap".

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Seems like this winter that there has been a band of snow and extreme cold from central CA to upper NY.

We are north of that band and it's mostly been pretty mild after an early start of cold and snow in November.

Definitely the case for central CA. Not extreme, just a bit colder than usual, for several months, and consistently.

He's La Nina's brother. She just left after a couple years of hanging out. He's known to stick around for about four years. La Nina tends to run cooler and El Nino tends to run warmer. I have all the early spring flowers coming up. Flowers that are usually out for Easter

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Mid-February is feeling more like mid-April around here. I heard someone mowing grass yesterday. I leave all my plantings in gardens alone until early spring just before things want to start growing. I leave the leaves lay to help insulate, then rake them off and mulch early spring. And that's when I trim shrubs and perennials back. Well, I started doing that yesterday because the plants think that time is already here. I shovel my driveway by hand and after the last snow rake the stones back into the driveway. No need this year. A lot of snow blowers next year will have two year old gas in them. We're starting off this morning in the low 50s, well above the normal average high. Very strange. Rain coming in mid-day and through the night. Low tonight is expected to be around 60. The mildest winter I can ever recall

Weather is screwing with maple trees . Last week they were running well . Warm days and mid 20s over night . Now they are hardly dripping into the buckets. To warm suppose to get back to more seasonal temps

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Yep Dave. I have a dandelion in my grass. It's a rainy day and night here. It's supposed to be mid-60s overnight, warmer than today, then temps drop tomorrow to the point we'll have a hard freeze into Saturday morning (28*). Saturday sunny in upper-40s and 32 overnight. Then it's back to the 50s.

At the pizza joint the weather report showed warmest winters and this year is 6th since records have been kept. I said I've never seen such a warm winter. I was right. The five warmer winters were all before I was born

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We had snow Monday night and it got down to about one below zero Tuesday night.

Supposed to be up in the forties again tomorrow.

I'm guessing that it will keep going back and forth like this until at least April.

Have the windows open . 51 ° at 8 am was 79° in the house I'm only running the wood stove at night . I've only used 1/2 the wood I usually would have by this time .

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Ironically, I'm paying more for heat this warm winter. It's too warm for the woodstove. I hope the bore bugs leave me some wood for next year . I used the woodstove around Christmas for a week and a couple/few weeks ago for two days. I'll start a fire tomorrow morning just to use some wood because I can. By Monday I'll be letting it go out, upper 50 highs and 40s lows. 67* on Thursday. I have a feeling we'll get our cold when it's transition to Springtime. It was colder at the front end during that transition. Bad wind comes along with these sharp gradients.
