Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

Thanks for the comments guys! I did get part of my real trans crossmember cut last night, I'm using a piece of extra square tubing we had from my brother's project. I need to get the bracket cut and put in place for the tranny to mount to. I'm also hoping to get all my wiring harness off so I can get it sent in to be cut down.

I am thinking about under the dash. Not 100% until I get the harness back to see how much slack I have. I did get the harness off tonight.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I actually got some work done tonight, I was able to finish my trans crossmember. I ended up using all extra metal I had laying around, guess I learned something from my dad. I think it turned out ok, not the lightest, but it will be strong as heck, and it saved me a couple hundred bucks. It only took me a few hours, this is actually one of the fabricated parts I feel the most proud of so far, it will look better after some paint. I'm still trying to figure out this wiring harness crap, it is driving me crazy. Here are some pics of the progress.

Can you imagine someone rolling on here and announcing he lost his transmission because his crossmember failed due to termites? They'd either be shamed so bad they'd never return... or be made a moderator.
HEY-OH!

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

Well since I couldn't find the rims I really wanted I had to change themes for the truck, and go with a steel crossmember. This guy out bid me on the only one off set made.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

That's hilarious. I was wondering when they were going to get back to the wooden wagon wheels. They just keep getting bigger, and bigger.

I think you could have a set made in Mahogany that would look good on the truck man.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I was just going to google a pic of wagon wheels for grins and actually pulled that pic. The guy really made those, the pic is real. Some guy over in London, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that it was real.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I got my crossmember painted and installed, installed the engine for the final time, I hope. I started putting the front suspension back on, now if I could just get over the wiring hurdle I would be getting somewhere. Anyway it feels good to see her on all four feet again.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I finally got my wiring harness sent off, they said it should be done in two weeks tops. So in the meantime I have been working on my exhaust and mounting my gas tank. The exhaust looks ok, but you can tell I did it myself. I need to get some mufflers but I'm having a hard time figuring out what to get. I really need to keep it as cheap as possible. I have also been reading alot about needing to have an H pipe to prevent popping on deceleration, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in. Here are some pics of the exhaust.

There is a saying in circuit board design... There's always room for one more line.
Use it.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I wanted to do an x-pipe but don't have the space....thinking of going with an H under the tail fo the trans now.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

I think the h pipe is doable. I am going to try to run it over the driveshaft, I just have to make sure it doesn't get to high to hit the bottom of the cab. I was thinking of running it under the trans tail but the way I'm going to run my fuel lines, I didn't want them to be that close. I've been reading up on the h pipe and I've seen alot of people say that it doesn't have to be the same diameter pipe as the exhaust, so that might help a little. Here is the idea of what I'm going for, think I'll try it tonight.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

H pipe is in. Doesn't look too pretty right now, but after some grinding it should look ok, for a homemade exhaust.

Re: Project “Learning as I Go”

Is that the lowest ride height your truck will be. if not the drive shaft may hit when you hit a dip or bump. It does look good though and I hope it works for you . If it does that just might be what I will do to mine. I have often thought of using a piece of 3 inch pipe that is oval shaped to actually be slimmer so it wont hang down below the frame so much
