Mopar anyone?

I've owned a lot of cars over the years, but can only speak for one Dodge and not much, it was a 75 Dart 318 on the cheap, solid body and boring interior. Got me where I needed to go, no problems less a carb and it sounded like a jet plane warming up. Every cold morning after driving four miles up the HWY, it would take a steep hill toward work and on top would POP! Carbon in the intake or something like. Sold it for what I paid for it. Almost forgot I had to replace the heater core, it was easy. Sold it needing ball joints for what I paid for it, cool little car.

I don't know much about them, but I like the heck out of them, I've been in a Charger 440, the car made a statement, driver was nuts anyway. While GM cars are so nice, I think if I had pick of one it would be an Mopar RT or something like. If I were RICH this red superbird might be my first choice, the story of the bank heist hits home.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I have owned two Mopars. One was bulletproof, the other..... not so much. My memory is a bit fuzzy as to the years, but I think the Maxiwagon (passenger van with an extended back section) was a 1971. It had a 318, 2-barrel carb, auto. trans (727?) and was underpowered but unbreakable. I'm even less sure about the Plymouth Duster -- let's just say it was early Seventies. It had a 340, auto trans, and a Thermoquad (I think that's what it was called). It was a 4-barrel carb with a plastic (or partly plastic) body that was prone to vacuum leaks. Never could get it to run right, and when I gave up and traded it on a new 1979 Honda Accord, the battery died at the dealership.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I grew up with mopar. My dad tinkered with cross ram max wedges, tunnel ram 440’s, dual quad 383’s and even a slant 6.
Went with him for a test drive in a 70 hemicuda. Coulda bought it for 5250 cash. Those were the days!
I had my share. 1967 Hemi gtx, 69 hemi charger and of course a slant six or two.
My brother drove the first Daytona in Calgary Alberta. Wild car to see in traffic. Not his though. Delivering cross town for detailing. Funniest part was the big wing car was too long to fit in the bay. Had the tail hanging outside.
Got into chevies in about 77. Bought a 74 sbss. Been gm since then.

Yup!
Thermo quad had a phenolic resin body. Supposed to run cooler.
They either ran perfect or leaked like a sieve.
Most were crap. Swapped out for a Holley or an afb with an adaptor.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I had a 68 Charger R/T when I was 16 years old. The tired 440 would still fry the tires. It broke down a lot but it was a beater when I bought it and I was a kid that continued to beat on it. It was a fun car when it was running. It was the first car that I drove over 100 mph in.

Then came the gas crisis and I sold it and bought a Datsun pickup which was way more dependable and kept me out of gas lines. I remember the signs in front of gas stations saying "No Gas' and thought "I've got to get rid of this gas guzzler'.

I'd love to have to have it back. I loved that car.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I traveled a lot for work and our company had National as our primary rental company. So we had top tier status in regards to car selection. I rented many late model hemi Chargers and Challengers. Nice cars. They are not slow. I actually liked the Chargers a little better because the rode better.

I recently picked up my first mopar, distant family car that sat in shop wayyyyy too long,I've been slowly rebuilding it and one thing I can tell you is these mopar parts are way over priced. Its a 70 challenger rt 383 convertible similar to the one in the movie natural born killers,I have yet to drive it.

That's a nice Challenger. It should be a lot of fun when you get it back on the road.

Parts for old Mopars are way up there. Heck. Prices for old Mopars are crazy too.

Nice. Chevy powertrain wins. Impalas and Caprice had a rep as the world's best built cars, for around 1971+/-. I owned a 78 350 Caprice coupe, super nice, dual exhaust, Dunlaps, pin stripe. Lasted a lot of years, then 70K comes and pretty much everything had failed when I sold it. I was guilty of some abuse. I've had bad luck with 350, the other new to me flat cam in a nice 72 Malibu with 62K miles. The car came out of the coast for sure however, nice ride but it stunk, trunk was hit, cancer here and there. I treated some rust to slow it, drove it some years and bye. The next owner drove that car every day for the next 20 some years, cancer still evident, same spot on the fender. We were on the same schedule. He replaced the wheels early. Hope he kept them, though possibly a poor swap, it never looked the same, at all. The wheel assemblies were near mint.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I'm a fan of Mopars as well as C10s.

My dad's first car was a 75 Dart Sport. 318 Auto, A/C, red with the white strip that went from the front to the quarter panel and then up to the roof. Also had a white, vinyl top.

My grandpa bought a 67 Belvedere to use as his rural mail car. Bench seat, 318, auto car so that he could drive with his left hand and foot while reaching out the passenger side to deliver the mail. There's a few scratches on the passenger door that's about mail box height
My uncle has the car now, but it's sitting under his car port since he took it to his home. I hope that if he ever decides to sell it that I'll get a chance to keep it in the family.

Last is my grandpa's 95 Dakota that he bought new in October of 95. Only put around 53 thousand miles on it, then gave it to me for my 16th birthday. I have over 76 thousand on it now

Re: Mopar anyone?

The nice thing about Mopar is they're not a Ford

GM car wise I'm more a Pontiac guy, but Camaro has really grown on me. Not that I ever disliked them. In my day I thought the 79 Camaro Berlinetta was cream of the crop. Now I know 67-72 trucks are.

Re: Mopar anyone?

I too had a 67 2 dr. Belverdere for along time ,always liked the 67 GTX but I got rid of it couple yrs. ago. Couldn,t find any parts for a 67 ,only a one year car ,66 was close. Parts were toooo expensive if you could find any. Always needed a quarter panel for it and they don,t make one ,weell after I sold it AMD came out with one, oh well.

Re: Mopar anyone?

Had a 64 Belvedere with a 318 push button auto with air. Was a nice survivor no rust and the interior was still like new. Started to get a little surface rust around the back up lamps and being just married didn’t have the funds to do the old girl right so I sold her to a big mopar fan. He did the fix right and the next year the car was on the front page of the paper from the big local car show fully repainted. My wife is still mad I let it go and would love another as that was the best riding car we have ever owned.

A girl-friend back in college drove one of these. It had a v6 and 3 speed manual ( console shift ). It would easily allow power oversteer...probably due to skinny tires, but still....

I used to hear guys say, "I wouldn't own a car that laughed at me every time I went to start it. Hee hee hee hee hee" . Come on guys, that's funny. If you were around in the muscle car era you would know only Mopars had that fast spinning starter like everything has today.

Re: Mopar anyone?

Mama had to have a Charger RT. It was an ‘07 and we had very little trouble out of it. Sold it earlier this year to a teenage boy. I told his grandpa he didn’t need an RT, but the man said his grandson wanted it and he was a responsible kid.

He wrecked it already. No one hurt, but the car is a big mess now from pictures he put on Facebook.
