Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Regan and Dale...it seems nothing's simple ..
I've ran all the wiring..checked pin locations, and continuity from plug to plug on cam and crank sensors..everthing checks ok.. guess my next step will be replacing sensors..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Good luck Greg. I bet the crank sensor will fix it. And if it doesn’t, don’t forget a new part isn’t necessarily good.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Long overdue updates...
I'm still fighting the no-crank issues..
I've done everything I know to do..
Checked all grounds...all good..doubled them up anyway
Have constant 12v and key on and crank 12v
Checked fuel pressure..58psi
Checked crank sensor, it bench tests good and backpinned at the ecm plug it shows signal
Checked cam sensor, it also bench tests good and backpinned at the ecm plug it shows signal
Had 37 (haha) people telling me to change them anyway..so I did..still no crank..
Checked wire pin locations in plugs, all good
Had ecm checked twice..no issues there.. put it in 2 diff trucks..both ran fine with my ecm..
Checked injectors multiple times ..all spray good.. checked injector solenoid with stethoscope, can hear them firing.. remove intake , raise up above engine ..crank it over..all 8 injectors are spraying..
Pull engine down to check cam , marks line up perfect.. still will not crank..
Pour gas in throttle..itll crank right up every time and run til poured in gas runs out..
Trying to get up with a different tuner and see if he can figure out what's going on..
Very very frustrating..so far 2 different tuners, psi tech, and 3 different mechanics all say theres no reason it wont run..
So til that happens ,on to other things...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

When I did the exhaust, I didnt like how much side sway the pipes had,,
So i got some 3 hole mounts..
Fabbed up new support bracket..
Works great..
3 hole mount vs the 2 hole mounts I was using

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Also moved the truck over to my temp paint booth..
Gonna have to touch up a few spots with epoxy primer..
Then the cab painting will happen..
Things have finally slowed down at work where I hopefully will have more free time for truck stuff

Impressive diagnostic effort! Yep, it should run.

Just one random thought.

When engine is cranking over, does fuel pressure stay at 58 psi? Since the engine runs with gas poured into it, it should run with injector sprayed gas. If it isn’t, then I am theorizing something is happening with the actual fuel supply through the injectors during crank.

With a carburetor, we checked fuel pressure and volume. If a gas supply line is pinched off going to your injectors, it could display 58 psi static and drop off rapidly in crank as the injectors are firing.

Or pump could be cutting off somewhat during crank.

I kinda like the idea of putting a LS in my panel or other old project but things like this make me forget that idea. I know less than nothing about the newer engines so i will stick with the old school compression, spark & fuel without all the electronics. I know you will be tickled when you finally figure it out. Heck, this morning I changed out the fuse block in my 06 chevy van and when I fired it up to check on things it would not run right. Put the scan tool on it and had 15 codes. WTF it ran fine before. I guess when I plugged in one of the harness connectors it kicked a couple of the relays out just enough to not make contact & I didn't notice. Plugged them in tight and it cured it. I am usually not that lucky.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Doug, the way i have the gauge mounted I cant see it while I'm cranking.. but I have looked with key on shows 58psi, after cranking it still shows 58psi.. I'll need some help to monitor it while cranking..
But the injectors are spraying while I'm cranking it ..

Richard..I know what you mean.. I dont have a problem with electronics..when they work.....
but when they dont , I get aggravated, real quickly..
I've done several of these..but this is the 1st time I've had all these issues

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Me to Dale..!!!.. I'm gonna do the paint 1st though..

So after getting a chance to do some sanding, I found a couple of spots on the back of the cab I just wasnt happy with.. these spots are where the inside cab brace is welded in.. it gave a high/low spot on the outer cab skin.. so I did some hammer dolley work on it and skimmed it with filler.. the drivers side was way worse than pass side..
Then after going over the cab ,I decided to just respray the whole cab with epoxy.. and high build..
So got it all resanded with 80g and started taping everything up today..
Hopefully paint coming soon
This is the 2 spots I worked on .. I couldnt get it "perfect " but hopefully itll be ok

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well after several delays (of course) , I finally got all the sanding done,
Inventoried my primers and found that my 2k high build was bad..
probably didnt have enough to do several coats anyway,
got plenty of epoxy.. so I'll hold off til next week, and grab some more high build ..
I'm gonna do the epoxy, and follow that right up with high build inside the primer working window...
hopefully eliminating one round of sanding
So I've spent some spare time taping it up..
Hey!! Looky here...truck in a bag..!!!

It's progress. You'll get it done. Almost on the downhill side of things now.

"Truck in a bag". That was a clever attempt to cover up the disappointment of not being able to prime like you planned. Pun intended.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Primer day.....
Sorta...Well....... I reckon if theres a way to screw something up, I can find it..
Got up this morn...
Mixed up my epoxy..
Laid down 3 coats...waited 40-45 min between coats...
All good..epoxy layed down nice..
Plan is to come right over the top of the epoxy with the high build..
Spec sheet says 30min to 3 days window for topcoat..
Waited a full hour..
Layed down 1st coat..all good..
Waited another hr, sprayed second coat..
Went all the way around the cab ,all was going good til I got back to my starting point..
WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when I got back around the truck to my starting point I noticed this fancy paisley pattern in the primer..
Right before my eyes I watched the whole truck cab turn this pattern..
I'm bummed... dang it !!!!

Wow! That is all I can say. You have some real talent. I don't think anyone else could make that pattern if they wanted to do so.

Sorry, but that is a true bummer.

damn that sucks for sure. I would be kinda concerned that the primer is not bonded to the epoxy and might peel up

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well...I agonized over what happened all last night...still dont know what I did wrong

I thought I may have used the wrong hardner with the highbuild..but the highbuild and hardner were both new and unused..I mixed up the 1st batch and sprayed it..while waiting for it to flash I mixed another batch..this is where I thought I went wrong.. so I poured the remaining hardner is a measuring cup.. the mix uses 4oz in my cup..there was exactly 8oz gone from the 32oz can.. so that's not what happened... so I'm back to i dont know..
But I did try some sanding.. luckily (I hope) ,it sanded well and smoothed out nicely..
maybe ,hoping, praying it's not as bad as it looks
I'm gonna take it down with 220g, and (fingers crossed) I'm gonna do 1 more coat of high build and see what happens..
Now...sand sand sand..

On the brighter side, I got a call today saying my rear bumper was ready..
I dropped it off at the powder coater on Tues...it was ready this morn..
Sandblast-primer-powdercoat.
Had it done in flat silver.. turned out awesome..they did a great job..
I tried to leave all the old farmer welds on it.. the beauty marks from yrs of use/abuse ,are all still there
The stories this ol bumper could tell..
Gonna leave it wrapped til I get ready to mount it..

Damn, that's gotta be a kick in the teeth Greg. Lots of work done and now need to be redone. Hate to see you go thru that but keep at it, you will come thru.

Sorry to hear about the primer. I hope a little extra sanding is all it will take.

On a different note, the bumper is way cool!
