We are about to be grandparents for the first time and its a boy, Jackson Monroe. Paw is gonna build him a truck and if he hates it, he can sell it and buy something he likes. Going to shorten it to a 115" length and paint it in the 72 theme of white/black/ white. Lots of metal work, lots of hard work and I can't wait for him to ride in it. I have almost everything to assemble this thing, but I will make a few changes along. Stay tuned as I will post often and update progress. When I get it home, I will get some pics up here.
Cool truck!

Thanks. I guess maybe a little update. I got the blue truck running, and it didn't take much. I really don't think the eng/trans sat long without use. Waiting on a shifter linkage kit, need to bleed brakes, you know ,all the little stuff to get it on the road. Won't be much longer.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

Finally, got my shift linkage from Classic Industries in CA. About the only game in town it looks like. Got it on and adjusted today. It seems like the closer I get , the harder it is to get the parts to finish up with. Hopefully , I can get these brakes bled and get it to the exhaust shop soon.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

Well today was epic for the old blue truck. I backed it out of the garage under its own power. Last Saturday at the swap meet at Super Chevy, I found enough rustic trim to finish it out. Still have to weld outers on it and put the hood on. Its off to the exhaust shop next and replace the rubber in front with the right size. Those are roller tires on the front. Here are some shots of her as it sits. The stance is good, brakes are good, PS feels great, and I am sure after a set of plugs, it will purr.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

Thank you sir for the kind words. I am really happy with this one and how it is turning out. Maybe before its over, my favorite one yet. I like the caps too, but I picked up a set on the board nearly new looking for "Sunday" use. This is pretty much it for how the outside is gonna look because I just have a couple of rust holes to patch and blend, the weld the rockers in and call it good. Check it out.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

Lets fix a door, or at least get rid of a couple of rust through places on the drivers side. It has the typical hole in the front pass fender at the bottom that I will tackle next. Doors are remarkably solid on this truck, but these 2 spots bother me. I will post a series of pictures. Not perfect, just a solid repair and a feeble attempt to blend the spots in with the old paint.

No sir. I sprayed some black rustoleum in the spots I welded up. This heap will be in the dry unless I get caught in the rain. I will have to remove both door panels to replace the window regulators soon, so I should get some and coat it in there. Loaded up this morning and off to the exhaust guy. I hope this turns out well.

Yes sir. I get it back tomorrow evening, I hope. Some days progress goes better. I have my lights working, dimmer, blinkers and dome.
No horn. No wipers. No fan motor. I will have to troubleshoot these items and get my gages working. One day at a time is the plan.
Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green on Father's day weekend. Gonna go to that one for sure.

Maybe an issue at the fuse block?

The truck is looking great

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

I think the wiper issue is a switch problem. The fan motor is a broken fuse plus a switch, probably. Horn? Who knows. I will sort it out for sure. Got back from exhaust and it looks great, sounds good, and all tucked up under there like it should be. It is hit or miss in these parts on a custom job. All the old timers have retired and a lot of these young guys are learning how to bend pipe. Popping the ds door panel off next and putting on a mirror and another door handle, adjust the door, and off for the maiden voyage. I looked at the sticker on the old plate and it has been off the road since 1993. Another one saved.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

Thanks Low Elco for the kind words. I took the old girl out for the 1st tme over the weekend. Lots of little things to fix here and there, then I will post a few shots of it done and then enjoy it. I'd like to thank all you guys and gals that have dropped by this thread and especially those that have contributed with answers on my questions. Also, I have waffled about lettering the truck since I started on it. I'm leaning to the "not doing it" side but I would also like to give a little hustory on the truck. It was bought new in 1972 at Parson's Chevrolet in Mayfield Ky. Then ended up at Shelton McClains within 2 years or so. A family friend, Billie Joe, bought it there and owned it till he passed. When I was 13 in 1974, he gave me a ride home with my bicycle in tow in this truck. He had a booming country garage business and used this truck for parts hauling for years. It was retired , I guess in '93 by the plate lapse and replaced with a light blue and white squarebody. A buddy is building that truck as we speak. It sold at his estate sale and ended up in my garage.
His garage was named "Billie Joe's Garage and Parts". Everybody knew him and he enjoyed a long life . He was good friends with my Dad as they were born the same year. Good guy and he deserves recognition for keeping this truck from the crusher or being parted out until I could rescue it.

Started cleaning up the wiring and crap from inside the cab today. Got rid of the old nonworking stereo and had already got rid of several speakers. It was a nice surprise to find the dash uncut. Fan switch is broke but the heater controls are all fine. Jumpered the switch and it works. Wipers are next.

Put a set of critical guages under the dash. Good thing, my "Made in Israel"
New 180 thermostat was faulty. Stuck closed. Put it on the stove to make sure and it is going back. Oil pressure is at 35/40 at idle, volts are a little high but steady. Gonna watch them . Overall, this thing looks like its a winner. Wipers next. I keep saying that , don't I?

Well folks, this build is coming to a close. Going to Bowling Green next weekend to the Hot Rod Reunion. Picked up a vintage 7up cooler roomy enough for a tool / fluids box the other day. Took it down to the other shop after carpet and door seals installed. It was tedious but not bad.

Thanks. Put the door sills on and have taken it out on a couple of 20 mile trips. I want to iron out as many bugs as possible before I make a long haul. I believe this is one of the best driving 67-72 trucks that I've had the pleasure of building. It was a short 6 months to get to this point. Gonna spend some time getting the Camaro up and going and then I will get back to the black and white 72. I used some of my parts stash on this truck, so I will have to grab a heater box and steering column. I have every piece of sheet metal and a complete perfect front clip. Also a decent bed to cut down. I have a screenshot photo of a truck on my phone for inspiration. If it turns out anywhere as nice as that, I will be perfectly satisfied.

Down to getting the horn and wipers working. Wiper is a locked up motor. Horn, who knows. Installed the dash pad . Worth a picture anyway.

Re: The building of "Monroe" 72 4x4 swb

They had a decent sized show near me this weekend. Really surprised by the lack of 67-72 trucks that showed up. Not really a local car show person, but one of my friends had never displayed his 69 camaro after a 17 year restoration. I told him I'd go sit with them. Had several long time friends show up and ended up having a blast. Lots of people stopped and looked and talked about the old truck. Didn't have to polish on it a bit.
