Torque Converter Recommendation
In a related thread I asked a question about torque converter rattle. It looks like I'm going to have to separate the engine and transmission, so I'm going to replace the torque converter while I've got it apart, whether that proves to be the problem or not.
Here are my vehicle specifications: 5.7 Vortec, HT383 cam (288/308 duration), Quadrajet, HEI, 9.5:1 compression, stock TH350, 3.73:1 gear ratios, 12.5x33 tires. Mostly driven around town. Any recommendations for a good torque converter?

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
I'd look for something around a 23-2500 stall.

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
Do you have a preferred brand?

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
I just get them from Transtar for my builds, but I don't do anything high performance, mostly stock and some occasional HD and towing stuff

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
I've had good luck with Jegs converters...Have you looked at your flex plate? Sometimes them things will crack around the bolt circle and make rattling and knocking noises. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/6040...rque+converter This one has a little lower stall but is $60 more expensive. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/60402/10002/-1

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
I've used Yank and Circle on my hot rods and like them a lot. They pretty much drive like a stocker until you nail it. If you contact them make sure you have all your engine and drive line details in hand because they will want to know.
Not cheap but good. |

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
HT383 cam is puny, you basically have a stock 350. I'd use a stock convertor myself. Had a 2300 stall on a previous truck and hated it for a daily driver.

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
Puny? That's kind of harsh... How about "mild"?

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
Puny for a race car. I ran a smaller cam in a 400 I built a few years back and it pulled like a freight train up to around 4500 when the trans shifted. If I remember the specs correctly it was a 400 block, .030 over, flat top pistons with 598 stock(ish) heads that I had 1.6 exhaust valves put into and a mild polish on the ports. Compression was about 9-1, cam was a comp 268. running an edelbrock 650 carb. Not all engines built have to run up to 7k

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
With 3.73 gear and 33 inch tall tire and mostly town driving I would stay with a converter closer to stock. 65 mph will be about 2000rpm, most of your driving would be below 2000 rpm. Converter would be slipping most of the time making it feel like you have less power and get worse millage.

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
A comp 268 is much larger then an HT383 cam. HT383 doesn't even have 200 @.050 intake duration, its smaller then a stock LT1 cam.

Re: Torque Converter Recommendation
I would stick to a converter with an advertised flash around 1,600-1,800 RPM. You don't want the converter slipping still, when you're into your peak power building RPM. Or, could add a bit of camshaft and run a higher stall converter. I run a 2,800 stall converter and love it.
