My ersatz P03 hubcaps

Until I find a very nice set of chrome 1968 1/2-ton P03 hubcaps, here's what I'm using in their place. Wheel Vintiques says they're repops for 1952 Chevy. I just added the black pinstripe & red-orange vinyl stickers a couple of weeks ago and I'm much happier with them now. I considered putting more black vinyl around the rim to mimic a P03, but I've decided to stop while I'm ahead. If I never find a set of P03s, I will be happy with these.

Heck yes. If you don't find PO3s you are good. I'll say, if you do find your 100% correct match your truck deserves it

Re: My ersatz P03 hubcaps

Very nice work on the hubcaps. That should be an example for others, maybe with blue bowties, gold bowties, etc.
And after looking it up I now know what ersatz means.

Those look real sharp. There was a guy a while back that did the same thing with 80’s S10 caps and they looked real good too.

Jeff, I’ve been driving it around Iowa and have 2500 miles on the resto. Still haven’t installed A/C or cruise, and watching a trans issue closely before I take any road trips.

Yes—these would look good with the other GM colors, or color-matched to the truck. The sky is the limit when you find someone with a Cricut machine. I used 3M/Scotch brand vinyl (at Michael’s) that’s made to be used as car stickers. Their Atomic Red is real close to the Chevy Orange used on my repop grille & fender badges. The black outline is from a $2.99 roll of 1/8” black pinstripe from AutoZone. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Re: My ersatz P03 hubcaps

Those look great! Wonder if a guy could do something similar for C20 caps.

I know what “ersatz” means, only because the word was spoken by Leonard’s mom, on big bang theory, tv show. Very funny scene

I still need to look it up. I've been telling people they need to look into the Chevy car hubcaps for years. Especially on trucks that aren't done to be original. It's nothing new. hubcap swapping was a common thing back before custom wheels. I prefer the look of wide steel wheels with hubcaps over mags, and on my first '72 I ran wide steelies with '55 Chevy hubcaps.

Unfortunately no. The 8-lug bolt circle requires a larger hubcap. We are limited to 69-75 or 76-91 hubcaps, or other brands. 1/2t hubcaps are far more plentiful with many options. It's tougher with GMCs since there is no car counterpart, unless you go to BPOs. That's how I'm doing my '67 GMC. I have original caps but also a set of '65-'72 PMD caps. Right now I have '54 Chevy hubcaps on the rollers. Other than to be original, I think Chevy made a lot of better looking hubcaps for cars. Until you look close it's all the same look
