700r4 cooler lines?

folks..

i have been making modest progress on the '56 GMC, not breaking any records, just nice and slow as the $$$ allows.

I'm to the point where i have a rolling chassis, trans and motor set (still some work to do to get my angles right, but thats another thread).

my issue right now is the transmission cooler lines from my 700r4. through some research I've found that my trans is a '90 model MD-8 case (0CH[R?]M166B). originally i had in my mind that this was from a '91, but its not.

anyway i went about ordering fittings from my parts guy who looks up my trans (no a big chain, local shop, never let me down type thing) to make my own cooler lines (aux cooler to be mounted in front of my stock rebuilt rad). get the fittings, and they are too large?! ok, i return those and go teh stock OE replacement route and order OE replacement lines for a '91 2wd Chevy 1/2 ton 700r4. Again still thinking i had a '91 trans. Dorman parts 625-161 and 625-162. They come in the courier and alas, too big again?

its at this point I begin to doubt myself and my memory and set to research where to find the ID number for my trans, and find the number above, identifying as a '90 model, 700r4 (has the rainbow / casting defect at the connections do things are lining up so that's good.)

Surely things didn't change btwn '90 and '91 in terms of the fitting size on these trans? the same part number from Dorman says it will work on a '90 model? have i come across a 'white buffalo'? or am just not as astute in finding parts online as i thought?

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

Well it is either time to get better at reading parts catalogs or get a more knowledgable parts guy

Dorman 625-161 and 625-162 Are 91/ 90 something ENGINE OIL COOLER LINES not transmission cooler lines.

That after searching for over an hour for fittings to fit that hose to that trans.

There are some changes on TRANSMISSION cooler lines where later ones might use an O ring fitting rather than a 5/16 inverted flare.

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

no help with fitting numbers, but an idea for routing of the lines.
truk has all steel lines, no rubber or flex lines going over to the frame
i came out of the trans with steel line and ran right under the flange on the oil pan
actually used the pan bolts to clip the lines in place, it was almost too easy
this is the only pic that shows the lines coming straight off the flange to the cooler
i bought the stock radiator with trans cooler built in, your lines would tuck under the rad

OMG. unreal.

Do you know how many times I looked and relooked at those parts and not once realized it was ENGINE. I can’t believe this. Thank you sir!!!

It took me a bit of time to figure it out.

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

i guess i assume cooler lines was trans and not Engine. not many times I've come across engine oil coolers though...

so i guess i got scared off making my own after the initial fitting debacle, but should i have been? i dont really like the looks of the rubber hose everywhere which was why i started down that path. ive never made my own lines, but i will for the brake and fuel lines anyway, so why not trans cooler lines...guessi got intimidated by teh an fittings, inverted flares, line size etc..figured easier to go OE.

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

If you can find it NiCopp tubing is supposed to bend a lot smoother than regular steel tubing. Example here https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-...5&gclsrc=3p.ds

I've had a hard time with the greenish coated steel tubing that O'Reilly's sells.. When it comes to bending it. I've got a collection of tube benders that will match just about anyones and the good Eastwood flare tool.

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

The transmission cooler line fittings for most transmissions up to the '80s used 1/4" X 18 pipe thread X 5/16" inverted flare fittings. Delco 8637742 is a good replacement for this part. The 700R4 generally needed more cooling and GM switched many of those vehicles to 3/8" cooler lines. In 1991 the 4L80E was released with 3/8" cooler lines as well. The front (IIRC) fitting for the 4L80E will fit the 4L60E but they're a little harder to find. There are brass versions available in a number of places including ebay and this: https://www.fitzall.com/supportDetail.php?31284G-172.

Note that you will want to ensure you can connect to the front end of the cooler lines when you are finished so ensure your radiator has or will accept the correct matching fittings.

The NiCop tubing bends very easily. It is very soft. It also chafes and wears out easily. Be sure you have plenty of support for the lines if you choose this tubing. Unfortunately folks here in the northeast learn to form brake lines shortly after graduating from diapers. Everything rusts here and brake lines are no exception. The green coated tubing is tough but should be sanded before flaring so the flare seals properly. You will want good quality benders like one from Rigid or MasterCool when working with 3/8" steel tube.

Re: 700r4 cooler lines?

i'll add: buy a decent bender, not a one size fits all
that's the key to good looking hard lines; brake, fuel and cooler
buy or borrow used and sell for what you have in them
i was able to borrow each size i needed

my fuel lines are also 3/8" and are made with 12" flex lines
