Thanks Don,

Gizmo is fully grown, don't let the cute 'I am a teddy bear' look fool you. She is a certified killer! Moles, mice, rabbits you name it. She always insists on trying to lick me with the remnants of her kill fresh on her lips....Monster...

Beaker does the same.....

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Today I actually used Woody for the purpose he was intended for… Being a truck.

Not super exciting but went to collect 50 Gallons of heating oil with Hound #1 for company. Was only a total of about 20miles but over some quite challenging roads, lots of roundabouts, few straights and fast B roads. First time I have actually really pressed on since the new suspension set up, what a pleasure to drive now! A little tuning to do but so much better.

Really good fun to push hard out of corners and overtake the unsuspecting in what they had previously thought was a rather beat up truck.

However, the increased ‘pace’ has highlighted a few issues which were masked by my previous, sedate, driving style encouraged by the looser handling. The most annoying of these was a high speed miss (by high speed I mean 60mph upwards…) when under load.

Intermittent but persistent… Mmmm… sounds like something is breaking down on the ignition side.

Once safely returned to PY Towers did a quick check of the leads and connections to see if anything was loose or obvious. All looked good so I decided to check the timing to see if there was anything untoward.

Oh Dear… is the total advance at 3500rpm supposed to be 68 degrees? No? That might be the problem then….

Didn’t have time to investigate further but looks like it is the age old HEI wear problem. 68 degrees feels like a new record…

Think I have 3 choices:-
1. Use the Old HEI I have on a shelf
2. Buy an upgraded HEI kit from Summit for $71
3. Buy a ‘new’ HEI distributor from Summit for $81

Will have a look at the HEI on the shelf but my feeling is that it is on the shelf for a reason, quite probably the same as that facing the current unit. A little time tomorrow will tell the truth.

So… looks like it is either option 2 or 3. Anybody any experience with option 3?

Not the usual picture heavy update but would appreciate the thoughts of those that have subscribed.

Anyway, until the next time.

I would go with door number 3, buy a new HEI. If your luck is anything like mine the old one will work perfectly................for about a week!

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Paul,
I vote for number 3. I am going to use is the smaller MSD style distributor that you run a box with. Here is an example. This is a knockoff brand. About a $150 cheaper than a real MSD. I have had one in my Caprice for the last 10 years with no issues. I am about to move the whole ignition from the Caprice over to the 64'

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Assault-Raci...item5afda99edf

You will need a box and coil to run it. This is a smaller cap distributor so it will have more room near the firewall.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Thanks for the pointers Gentlemen.

As I am planning my LS upgrade in June (gearbox fund permitting) I am going to try the HEI I have on the shelf mixed up with a few spare parts I have around to make something more acceptable in the timing dept.

If that proves to be a fail then the $80 summit unit will be finding a new home at Chez Y...

Ian, Have you moved your engine back? I have a large cap distributor at the moment and, whilst tight, there is no interference.

Dear Mr Summit,

Please can you send me a nice shiny new HEI distributor to replace the pair of FUBAR'd one I have in my truck.

Many Thanks,

Grizz,

Lots of progress but none of it worthwhile documenting as most of it is in a reverse direction.

Hope to be in a position to report forward progress in the next few weeks.

Until then have a picture of a kitten.

Plus

And one of these

Equals

But this

Highlights the need for these

And possibly

As there is probably another 20-30 loads of this.

One day I will get round to updating what I have been doing and why there is a rather large ‘red rash’ on Woody’s flank.

But until then…

You have been quiet for way too long Paul.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

It is said that every great story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Not sure who said that but they must have been a somebody or else we would never remember it.

The same could be said of any great road trip, Rian and Martins exploits in the States, Bruces epic travels across Canada and beyond and even my own humble expedition out into the wilds of…Kent…

Therefore Ladies (heres hoping) and Gentlemen Without further ado I give you the start of my own Road Trip to collect… well no spoilers as yet.

The Beginning.

An army marches on its stomach and, in my advancing years mine has grown to accommodate a marching army helped in no part by the great Ouma rusk.

Suitably fortified I awakened Woody from his slumbers.

Filled him with 11 gallons of Mr Shells finest and set (not sure where the picture is for this one but I am sure you can use the ‘Theatre of the Mind ™ ‘ to fill in the blanks and headed off the 50 miles to a secret location called Hever in Kent.

Its amazing how a 4.11 geared truck can cruise quite comfortably at 70mph when you are listening to the Adam Carrola pod cast via headphones…

Technology never fails to amaze me. Using Google Maps I set my journey to avoid the Motorway after leaving the M25 and was welcomed with the winter landscape that is the Garden of England.

The Middle.

I had ventured out from the flat lands of Essex to collect a new – well to me- work bench from Ross, a very nice chap who makes bike racks for a living in the shape of animals. No pictures but imagine cows, elephants and deer heads where the tusk, horn, antlers are the support for the bike. Got it? Good.

Safely loaded we had a chat about the disposable world we live in, furniture and why tea will always be superior to coffee. Plus we talked about cars. As you do. When you are a bloke.

This is Ross current mode of transport a rather nice Amazon. Nice.

So loaded up, hands shock and farewells made I headed back towards home via a short detour to see a certain Rian of this very Parish.

More scenery.

And safely on the afore mentions Grizz’s drive way.

More tea and a general chit chat about the important things in life. Like trucks. ( My best wistful looking into the sunset pensive model pose)

Every the gracious host and generous man that he is my arrival seemed to coincide with a nice new (to me) storage cupboard which was duly added to Woody’s load bed but not before Rian convinced me that it would be a great opportunity to take some pictures with the backdrop of the farm and the Medway/Thames estuary (take your pick Geography was never my strong suit.)

So we offloaded the bench and proceed to take a few snaps (gross understatement Rian has a great eye)

I will get that body damage fixed this month!

Now fully Papped out it was back to Rians to load the booty/bounty

Before leaving in time honoured fashion…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucVmsET4BFw

Any ideas why I cant get the video to embed? Grrrr...

My work here is done.

The End.

Can’t think of a more fitting end to the day.

I have actually done quite a lot to Woody in the year since he came into my ownership, once I have something worthwhile reporting I will post it up for your delight and edification.

P.

Well Paul,

Great as always to shake you by the hand and to talk about everything under the sun.

You wrote a much better report than I would have, thank you.

That Volvo Amazon is rather nice.

I wish I knew how to embed the YouTube video, but hopefully people will click the link and enjoy it.

Next time you come here we will probably tear into my engine....

Great way to end the story too......

Meat looked just right.

My favourite pic.

Would look good on RR's in the Garages at night thread.

Suitably fortified I awakened Woody from his slumbers.
