I spray the rubber seals with silicone

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

it's too bad that there isn't some sort of weather forecasting system to let people know this storm was on the way.

Or even some sort of communication system from California to New York so people could know about the storm that hit the Sierras about a week ago and slowly moved eastward across Wyoming, South Dakota, etc.

But no - it was all a total surprise!

Is there a point here? Who says no one believed the reports or did nothing to prepare? You can only do so much to prepare. We knew it was going to be bad BY the reports. They reported on it a week in advance and every day until it hit. There was probably more preparation made by more people for this storm than any before. It was a natural disaster in itself and it took lives. Nothing funny about that.

Great Idea

Silicone spray is on the list.

Along the same lines about ice and Freeze Ing Stuff

The (Nashville Star) Train Service here in Lebanon needs Silicone Spray also

Down here we only have this (Weather stuff) every Once in a Winter or Three.

People take a lot for Granted when it Snows or even when it rains.

Everyone leaves home at the same time Regardless.

I was driving behind the Plant Manager this morning

We was 2 minutes from the (work) Parking Lot.

The Commute /train (Nashville Star) crosses the same time every day on time every day.
Short Version of this story.

Well, this morning the (Trigger) that warns people and drops the railroad crossing bars.

That switch was Froze Shut.

The train Engineer noticed this instead of running over some one that was.

Less than Smart.

This Train Conductor needs reconiction.
Maybe I will take him a dozen doughnut one morning.

When the (Flashing Lights) was triggered for the warning of the train coming gates for complacent people.

There has been Mutiple times I have seen near miss accidents here.

This Train Conductor saved someones life this morning.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

After seeing videos from up north, we got off easy down here. No worse than any other "polar vortex", that has came our way in recent years. Havent got much done cause I dont like bundling up. I will say that in 2009 we had a BIG ice storm hit our area. It was forecasted, groceries were ravaged, and we were ignorant of it. Never watched the news. I was at work on the day it hit. 32 miles of trees falling across the road. Like running a gammit. When the dust settled, we were low on food, no power for 2 weeks, no water. But We did have gas logs, and thankfully, money to buy a portable generator. We could drive 35 miles to Union City Tn and get food, gas, a hot meal and kerosene. Since then, power outages are just a minor inconvienence. Prepping for such things is key.

Let's all go for a drive in the blizzard in a fwd car with no snow tires, and no blankets or extra food in case we get stranded. Should be no problem.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We over prepped for this storm , new generator , electic heater , fuel, groceries cooked a roast and Lasagna ready to go into the garage microwave extra propane for the gas grill if it actually got that bad . It got cold , Really cold but we never lost power and little snow . We were lucky compared to those in the north , The high cost of heating will really hurt those up there and we still have a few months to go before it starts to warm up for them . I'd say 2023 will see a huge amout of fire places being installed .

I have a Buck wood stove in the garage that I bought from my neighbor who was going to scrap it because it needed the door repaired , I'll probably put that project higher on the list .

3 people have been found in vehicles . Most of the deceased were in their homes or trying to walk to a warm shelter some died of cardiac arrest shoveling . It’s almost impossible to walk in blinding snow and 50 mph winds people got disoriented and perished due to exposure . The people who were stuck in their cars for the most part were emergency and first responders . You don’t see to many vehicles that aren’t all wheel or 4 wheel drive in Buffalo . Living in a city is a lot different than living in the country . Most people live in apartments and when the power goes out there’s no heat . It’s not like you can stick a generator out the window .

Even the big state plows were stuck . Up in that area most rescues are done with snow
mobiles . More people die trying to drive their cars through flooded roads before during and after hurricanes.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

If anyone knows how to deal with bad winter weather the people in Buffalo do. We hear about their big snows and high winds all the time. People all over this country know how Buffalo is in winter. You can't make an earthquake stop quaking, you can't make a tornado stop blowing, You can't make a landslide stop sliding, and you can't stop a blizzard from blizzarding. All over the country this storm was a matter of timing. We knew it was coming but couldn't tell other than the forecast. They could only predict when the front would hit where and when. They were pretty close for my area, like almost exact. But it was also Christmas Eve or the day before for some. The storm played a part in my travel plans making. This was an exceptional weather event and I'm sure there was a factor involved with the desire to be with family for Christmas combined with underestimating it's power. But not for most. Look at all the people expecting to fly in this weather. To me that is crazy. At least the airports they were stranded in had heat, some food, and back-up power. On Christmas it was a clear day but very cold. I drove up into the mountains where I knew there would be snow cover. Drove up and back same day. We checked the vehicle over more thoroughly than normal and brought along extra clothing and food in case we broke down. I considered not going but didn't want me or my son to miss having Christmas with 92 year old Grandma.

It could be that some people that got stranded were out to go help someone else in greater need than themselves and died trying.

I found a huge dead rat that froze in his tracks under the truck, it was -27 C. with wind chill up to -38 C. I thought his tail was a black ex. cord so I was a little shocked when I pulled on his tail and there was this big rat

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

It was a bad storm , Many are still burried in it , Im sure most of us get frequent AMBER ALERTS on our phones , We get them from nearby states all the time , With a storm of this size a warning should have been sent to everyone's phone over that system , It was on every news cast but many today don't watch the news and had no reason to be prepared for what they didn't know what was heading their way . It's sad so many died when the information was out there and they just didn't know .

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We had a bad winter in 78-79 and another in 84. So I got a good job in a paper mill in 1990 and in 1993 I bought my 1st new vehicle, a 1993 swb silverado. On the way to Murray Ky to special order it, I let my wife talk me out of the 1600 dollar 4wd option. I did not have another 4wd at the time and had always wanted one for the bad winters we have sometimes. Well guess what, 1994 turned out to be an @$$ kicker of a winter. I stayed stuck more than I stayed on the road. So... I gave her the truck that spring and bought a 4wd. Ive not been without one since and sometimes multible ones. It always pays off to be prepared as you can be.

Thing with lake effect snow is that within two or three blocks you can go from 3 ft of snow to a dusting . The last storm my stepson had 8 or so but where he works they had the 66 inches about two miles

Cold? What cold? Once this cold bomb passed through the temps have climbed to about 60*. Motorcycles riding around and yesterday while milling up some white pine trim I had a slew of yellow jackets out and very interested in the pine. All next week in upper-50s to mid-60s. Friday is the cool one at 44* high. No nights down to freezing all week.

We have had a couple or three really nice temperature days this week too. But it looks like another round of severe weather to hit us early this week. Some of those "weather guys" are saying late 2nd week January we may be in for another Siberian Express. I get tired of freezing but I always held to the fact that, every warm day you have in the winter, you are that much closer to spring.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We had some pretty good snow, ice, and basically crappy weather for the PNW. I post a pic on the 24th of our iced over driveway and snow banks from shoveling (banks to us little bit of crust to others heh). Anyway it was all gone a couple of days later. It warmed up and rained, and rained some more. BTW my SIL did break her wrist when she fell visiting

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Speaking of “severe” weather... We have had heavy rain in the Sierras and foothills for a solid week. Lots of flooding. A levee on the Consumnes River broke and flooded highway 99.

The clouds broke for a brief moment yesterday and I took this pic.

It’s already raining again, and we have extended rain in the forecast (this is not Seattle, it’s very strange to see this)… The levees will be strained again.

I've been reading about all that rain and flooding. It seems weather extremes are becoming the norm.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Will this help fill up reservoirs and lakes, potentially helping to alleviate some of the water supply problems?
