I6 will idle all day, dies with gas

On my all original 72 with the inline 6 and single barrel Rochester it will start and idle all day long no problem but as soon as start giving it throttle it immediately dies. Main jet clogged? Or am I missing something entirely?

With the engine off, remove the air cleaner housing so you can look down the throat of the carburetor. Move the throttle lever and loo for a stream of gas being shot into the carb bore. This is the function of the accelerator pump and a shot of fuel should be noticed at the first movement of the throttle. If it’s not happening, your engine can quit when the throttle opens.

If the pump shot is there, and the problem persists, I would check the fuel filter, and fuel pressure. If all good, then open the carb up.

To add to the other checks, How old are the fuel lines and the sock inside the fuel tank?

It was the fuel pump, very shortly after I posted about problem it started leaking fuel. Put new pump on and works perfectly now

Good for you.
However, watch that new fuel pump. I've had several go bad on me. One lasted a whole hundred miles before it was spraying gas all over the underside of my engine.
Two possibilities: 1] Cheezy Chinese copy of a real fuel pump, but made with cheapest possible components [and priced like premium].
Or
2] New gas with ethanol additives eating thru rubber parts in diaphragm.
So keep an eye on it.

Good advice, I had one that ruptured and pumped gas inside the crankcase, wiped out the bearings. Still ran good after a new fuel pump and oil change, but no oil pressure to speak of.
