Gas Tank Filler Neck Size Q

Straighten me out on the gas tank filler neck sizes in each year, please.

Specifically I need to know how a '72 compares with a '68. If they don't have the same size filler neck, do they take two different size grommets? Same size cab hole? What about gas caps? Thanks, Ben

They have the same size hole in the cab.... It is the neck sizes that are different. The 67-70 use the 2" fill neck hole grommet and the 71-72 use the 1 1/2" hole. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Anybody know where to get a replacement filler neck for a '71??? Mine had been 'modified' by a previous owner, and leaks when I make right turns and the tank is over 3/4 full... the very top of the filler neck doesn't seal right against the cap...

Re: Gas Tank Filler Neck Size Q

Yea, LMC has it wrong. They say 1-1/2" for 67-70 and 2" for 71-72. I have a 67 and bought the 2" from them anyway and it fit just right. I though maybe some previous owner had modded it but the hole and neck look factory.

Re: Gas Tank Filler Neck Size Q

Resurrecting real old thread but timely for me. I have one of the Classic Heartbeat gas filler grommets, which states they are for 71-72 trucks, and want to use it on my 72 with a filler neck and gas cap as my rear tank is being installed this week and want a dummy fill in original location. According to Wes info in this thread I am thinking I would have to use a filler neck from a 71-72 tank for the grommet to fit. I ask because I have access to a 1970 gas tank but think the grommet may not work with the 70 filler neck.
