Yeah, those bus-type were a solution for the mirror blind spot. Then came below eyeline mirrors. But how many truckers drive safely with west coast style mirrors, even today? We all know the routine, rock back or forward to see the blind spot. You could say that adds to safety by giving that extra second for a second look.

It does get to be second nature to look around the mirrors. But some times another vehicle has an uncanny ability to stay at the exact speed to continue ''hiding'' in the blind spot. If you're northbound, coming to a Stoplight, and another car is eastbound, on your left, they can stay in the blind spot until the image is too big to ''hide'' behind the mirror and suddenly seem to jump out of nowhere.
I once gave a visiting British friend a ride in my Stepside. He was freaked out by the blind spot. But from his perspective, he WAS sitting in the seat he was used to driving from [on the right] but as a passenger, he had no control.
It's a jungle out there.

Over the road truckers have a height advantage in big rigs.

West Coast Juniors are an acquired taste. Before cops had radar [and the legal speed was 55 or less] they were a superior form of rearward surveillance. And I've been on the road in that rig since those days.

Go for it. They're fun.
Total opposite to those bikini mirrors the kids are so fond of.
You do have to keep your eyes peeled for demons hiding behind the after dimension.
But no cops or semis can ever sneak up on your six on the highway.
