295s in back?

Done a good amount of measuring and it looks like I could do 295s but at max suspension travel (this is a 69 c10 with a c-notch, 6” drop in rear) the top of a 295/40r20 will be in the area of a wheel well that is about 12 1/4 wide. A 295 tire is about 11 3/4 wide…assuming I can get the wheel centered in the wheel well with the right backspacing, is 1/4 clearance on each side enough?! Or should I be downsizing to a 275 tire? What do you guys think?

Re: 295s in back?

I would say you need more than 1/4" clearance just for the normal suspension movement.
I am using a 275 tire and have roughly 1-3/4" between the rim and the box. Slightly less at the tire as it they are wider than the 9-1/2" rims I am using.
Looks like the 275 are almost 10-1/2 wide at the road.

5.5 backspacing on the speedways with 295 40 20 no issues or rubbing ever.

Re: 295s in back?

Thanks Chris, looks real good!

Accelo- And the 1/4 clearance I'm talking about is between the tire sidewall and the sides of the wheel-well when the suspension is at max travel (ie-laying on the bump stops). Normally there will be more room, but the wheel-well curves in a good 1/2+ under the fender lip. I would imagine the only time I would be at max suspension travel would be hitting an unexpected large bump/pot hole so the sidewall deflection wouldnt be an issue-but I am curious as to how much sidewall deflection there is on a lower profile (4.5 inches or so) tires during hard cornering.
