Custom Console

So, here is my problem..

I am wanting to build a custom console in my 83 Scottsdale with a bench seat. I have my design figured up but my issue is other than making a resin mold of the floor hump does anyone have any other ideas as to getting the angles right..?

Where my hump is it has a lip along the bottom and back which I plan to sit the console down on then fiberglass coat but trying to come up with a better way to get the shape to follow the humps lip and go all the way around the curve of the bottom of the dash.. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Custom Console

A guy I met a few years ago who did custom speaker boxes told me to cover what ever shape I wanted to match with aluminum foil. Make sure to secure it well . Then lay in a sheet of fiberglass cloth and apply the resin. Once it hardened, remove it from the shape and then add some more layers of cloth and resin to thicken up the panel.

I tried this once. After making my first layer, I cut some wood strips and glasses them along the edges as I was thickening the base. This gave me something to attach the side panels to.

Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas.

Re: Custom Console

They make the plastic wrap (think kitchen) that has one side that will stick. Press and seal I think they call it. I would use that on the floor pan.

I would use something a little stronger. Remember, during the curing process fibreglass gives off heat. More than enough to melt plastic wrap. Aluminum foil or a layer or two of painters tape is the way to go. Just remember to coat it with a light film of car wax as a release agent before the resin and matting go down.
