Re: How To Fix Uneven Panel Gaps

I also wanted to show the before just for reference. Not sure why the driver's side was in so much better condition. It only needed a cab corner. This side was TOAST!

Astronaut
you, sir, are a craftsman!

Duramax,
Your method should be ok, as far as not cracking out. Just know that the edge will be suseptible to chipping out should any thing hit the edge of the cab there hard, or get closed into the door.

Nice thread.

That is a great idea with the welding rod! I am going to have to try that. Thanks for posting the pics.

So is everyone else in agreement with 1/4" of filler in a door jamb being OK? Thanks for your reply primrrd!

Re: How To Fix Uneven Panel Gaps

As primrrd said, it will stick/adhere ok but if anything bumps the edge you'll have a large chip. Is the truck something you're gunna keep for awhile? If so you may want to try a more permanent repair. Filler has it's place when doing bodywork and is great stuff when used properly but it has it's limits too. It will probably be pretty durable as far as not cracking since it's on a stiff edge that shouldn't flex much but it will be very suceptable to chipping since it's on an edge.

Re: How To Fix Uneven Panel Gaps

I am planning on passing this truck down to my boys when that time comes. So a more permanent fix is definately what I'm looking for. I guess its better to find out now before its all painted.

I had one like that too. The way it was parked in the PO's driveway put that side facing the front of their house and it got watered all the time by the sprinkler system.

I didn't take any pics of the backside when I was taking pics for this write-up, but I don't fully weld up the backside to minimize the amount of heat from welding. The gap on the back looks just like the front does before welding the rod to the door edge. I do like to weld the backside gap every few inches. The gap gets ground out with a 2" sander with a 50 grit disc to roughen up the surface so filler will have a better surface to stick to. The edge is already three layers thick and now has a 1/8 rod welded on, so the edge doesn't flex enough for the filler to crack.

Looks great!! You'll be amazed at how much neater the finished body and paint work looks with even gaps! Nice job on the BBW conversion too!

You're right, thanks for the heads up. I added it to the body FAQ thread.
